I have often seen in the chat and other places where someone was accused of judging others and was condemned for it. In Matthew chapter 7:1-2, Jesus says "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you". In James 4:11-12, James says, "Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgement on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy". But do we not have the responsibility to judge who we are to associate with and do business with? Do we not have the responsibility to decide which behaviors we will emulate and which ones we will abhor? Jude and other biblical writers spoke harshly of false teachers. Paul called Elymas "a child of the devil" (Acts 13:10). Even James himself called his readers adultresses and enemies of God (James 4:4). Were these Biblical writers judging? I think so. I think judging is Ok if it is done with the right attitude. If we judge with love, and with the hope that the person will receive the wisdom of God towards repentence, while recognizing our own inadequacies and need for repentence as well then we will be OK. Also we should judge not on outward appearances, but on the persons heart and character. We should never gossip about or slander another person, but deal with them as a father or mother, or brother or sister, (See 1 Tim 5:1-2). Finally, judging someone is not the same as forming an opinion. We live in a world where we have to assess information about our surroundings and other people in order to know how to react in meaningful and hopefully positive ways.
