The title explains the question: what are some good tips and ideas on how to build a strong friendship? What are some good ways of helping the would-be friend to open up to me?

Any advice at all would be much appreciated.
God bless.

First of all you have to establish trust in the relationship and a foundation based on God.

Those are the two things both of you should look for. And then the rest falls into place by God , He'll equip you with loyalty to your friend and vise versa.

Oh yeah and keep your friends lifted up in prayer...thats one of the most important things in a friendship

Being an ear.....sometimes it's not necessary to say anything or try and work out our friend's problems....just being an ear and listening can do sooo much......Job's friends would have achieved so much more if they'd simply kept their mouths shut ;)

If you want to build a strong friendship, well, basically, bind your friendship with love... because love will last...
Like Jesus did... he even died at the cross because of His love...

uhh listening will help,
trust is like a must for a good friendship,
finding something u both have in comon,
or stuff u both like to do,
like if its a sport then u can talk about that or go out and play that sport.

"Love your neighbor as yourself" That sums it all up. Think of all the things that we do to ourselves to make sure that we are taken care of, and apply that to others. People already listed some, being an ear, build trust by your actions. Just being there for people helps ^_^

Just be yourself, always sincere, do not try to pretend that you are not

Well that's certainly true! I wouldn't want to be known for something that isn't true to myself.
Good tip. =]
