Hi everyone,

My name is elise and I was wondering if anyone can properly explain the fear of the Lord to me.

I know in Proverbs 1:7 that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, ect...

But what I don't understand is how do you live in the fear of the Lord.

The whole thing that people explained to me is that the fear is a deep aw or respect towards God which confuses me more because...

'How am I supposed to know what having a deep respect or aw towards look like?'

Which confuses me more because I don't understand what that looks like or what it really means practically in every day living.

The Fear of the Lord has been on my heart recently since I prayed to God on why certain pattens in my life keep repeating.

Of cause God is faithful and has reveal to me 1 peter 5:8 about being sober-minded...

But you can't be sober-minded without the fear of the Lord, right?

Anyways,

some insights or wisdom would be appreciated 👏

Thanks, and have a blessed day ^ ^*

God is the ultimate authority and has ultimate power; when He decides something it's final. Knowing that God has the power to give us life or to cast us into Hell should make everyone a little fearful. The way this manifests in everyday life is just remembering that He is God and we are only human; and walk accordingly.

The fearful will have their part in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8)

Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind

----------------------------------

What is the fear of the Lord ???

Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way, And the perverse mouth I hate.

----------------------------------

Romans 8:15
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Hebrews 4:16
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Luke 12:32
Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

----------------------------------

Romans 13:4
If thou do that which is evil, be afraid

Romans 13:1-4
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Jesus said "Fear Not"

Luke 12:32
Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Examples of fear being good (not being scared kind of fear)

Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Proverbs 14:26-27
In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

1 Peter 1:17
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

We fear God in the sense of intensely respecting Him — and feeling like worthless, lowly, filthy, rotten slime in comparison to His pure and clean holiness.

We force ourselves to hate sin and to strictly obey every command of Jesus. We relentlessly persecute lustful, selfish, cowardly, hedonistic, envious, greedy, perverted, disgusting, sadistic, insane thoughts the second they appear in our mind.

Our burning desire is to be uninterruptedly devout, reverent, holy, pious, righteous, peaceful, kind-hearted, courteous, friendly, generous, hard working, helpful, and obedient to parents, civil laws, spouses, and bosses.

Isaiah 66:2 CJB

Didn’t I myself make all these things? This is how they all came to be,” says Adonai. “The kind of person on whom I look with favor is one with a poor and humble spirit, who trembles at my word.

We are not to be living in paralyzed terror of a punishing tyrant, but we certainly dread being smug, self-justifying, or frivolous toward God.

I would suggest that you think back to when you were a small child and how you felt about your parents. They seemed to be all-knowing and all-powerful, loving but you did not want to cross them either. God is all-knowing and all-powerful, loving but also capable of being very stern, you do not want to incur His wrtath.

Some people say there is no fear of the LORD in the New Testament.

But the fear of the LORD applies to both Testaments because it has to do with our behavior that pleases God.

For if we do not have that behavior then punishment will come upon us.

And that is where the fear comes in.

Job 28:28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Pro 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Pro 16:6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

Psa 85:9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way.

Those who dabble in sin do not fear the LORD and do not receive knowledge and wisdom from Him for they refuse to abide by His ways.

Which means punishment will come upon them.

Anyone that truly fears the LORD will be too afraid to love sin.

Luk 12:4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

Luk 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
Heb 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

If a person sins wilfully then the blood of Christ cannot wash away their sins which is fearful for they will have punishment coming.

These people do not fear the LORD.

Isa 59:1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Sin separates us from God whether we claim Christ or not.

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If a person hates sin, and does not want sin, and allows the Spirit to lead them to not sin they will not sin.

So there is no excuse for the power is there to help us.

2Ti 3:4 lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Some people deny the Spirit leading them because they will not let go of the flesh.

And they do not come to the truth and do not fear the LORD.

Rom 11:20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
Rom 11:21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
Rom 11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

It does not matter the Old or New Testament if a person does not want the goodness of God but prefer sin then they will be cut off.

Which many people say they cannot abstain from sin so they are holding on to sin.

So they do not come to the truth, and will not receive wisdom and knowledge from the LORD, and do not fear the LORD.

These people were not saved in the first place.

2Pe 2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
2Pe 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
2Pe 2:22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Those not continuing in the goodness of God are people that have been saved but went back to sin.

Those who are ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth which Jesus said he never knew them were not saved to stop continuing in the goodness of God for they never started.

The Bible says God wants all people to be saved and He does the calling and choosing on earth.

So we have a choice.

Predestination means that God had the plan to give salvation to mankind before the foundation of the world.

But this salvation is to whoever wants it for God wants all people to be saved.

2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

The Bible says a person that names the name of Christ has to depart from iniquity.

It is not a suggestion, not an option, but they have to depart from iniquity.

If they do not depart from iniquity those are the people Jesus will say depart from me for they did not do the Father's will.

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, but many people do not.

Millions of people not fearing the LORD because they will not give up the flesh.

You are correct in that it means "to be in awe of".

The original Hebrew word is yir'â. It also means to revere, reverence.

It's a matter of showing humility in our lives concerning spiritual matters.
Acknowledging that God is the omnipotent force behind all things.

One thing it does NOT mean is to be afraid of Him, fearful of His might and wrath (unless you are in rebellion against Him, of course).
He is the God of love, mercy, forgiveness and will protect His people when needed.

IMO one ought to view their relationship with God as a parent/child relationship. Christ addressed God as His Father, and He taught us to address God as our Father.

If you have children, you understand that perfect unconditional love that you have for them. When they disobey and/or endanger themselves, you correct them because of that love, because you want them to be safe, smart and successful.

If you don't have children you at least understand the fear of disobeying your parents. Not fear for your life, but fear of a spanking, loss of privilege, shame and embarrassment, etc. If you rebel and/or disrespect them, their love for you doesn't diminish, but the relationship becomes difficult.

God doesn't necessarily care if you're in "awe" of Him or not. That should come naturally when you realize the gravity of His and our existence.

Those of Israel had to understand that the God they worshiped was not the same as the gods or the people around them. They did not have the indwelling Holy Spirit to guide them in truth. The first step in knowing God is to recognize him as God and the implication of that is that to be fearful.

Christians today can approach God through his son, Jesus. We are not limited to a tribal understanding. However, we can get lazy and walk by the flesh so being somewhat "fearful" might not be a bad idea.

I look at the fear of the lord as Also a gift and something healthy.

I also believe that the actual fear of the lord can unbound a person from sin and chains, I look at the fear of a lord as a seed and not just whatever fear you or a person may have, the fear being the lord's seed that makes a person tremble, that's shakes the darkness out of a person, kind of like a courageous fear that aids a person to overcome inner darkness. Like the spirit shaking your inner foundation, a bit like quaking in your boots, but more like the lord splitting your inner veil in two
