Diana and Janet looked at me.
"You're not planning to return the excess change to him, right?"
"Uhm, why not?" I replied. "They sold it lower than he had thought they would."
"Oh God!" Janet exclaimed. "Like, girl, $20 take you to hell, like seriously? That man practically swims in money. Girl, forget about that money and put it in your pocket, take it as your fare for your leg transportation"
"I can't do that. He might not know about it, but God knows, and that is stealing. If I give it to him and he leaves the money for me, all well and good, but if not, it's still fine. It's his money, and he deserves to know that there was an excess change."
"Ok then, Mother Theresa, go and return it," Diana said. "I don't know how much you're being paid. I'd have suggested you add that tip to your funds and help yourself, but knowing you, I doubt you would..."
I walked into his office, dropped the item and his change. He called me back.
"Raine, this is the third time you would be doing this. What do you take me for, a man that cannot leave a tip for the person he sends on an errand?"
I looked at him, shocked. "No, Sir, that is not the case, I—"
He stopped me. "Don't worry, Raine, I was just kidding. I've watched you for some time, and today was my last trial. Thank you for being trustworthy."
"Oh! You're welcome, Sir."
I made to leave, when he called me back and said, "Oh! So you're the boss now, leaving before I ask you to?"
"No, Sir, I—"
He laughed and told me to relax, that he was just kidding.
I stared at him in shock. Was this man trying to give me a heart attack, ah!
"My elder sister needs a manager for her business. You studied something related to Business Administration, right?"
"Yes, Sir."
"How come you accepted the position you're presently in?"
"It was what was available at the time I came here, and I was tired of not being called back for an interview in other companies I had been applying for jobs."
"Ok, there's no problem. If you're willing, she's in need of a trustworthy manager for her business. The pay is around $500k to $700k, with an apartment and a company car and driver to take you around. I've seen your academic qualification, I've watched you work with diligence and hard work, and to top it up, you have integrity and are trustworthy. You're what her business needs. Think about it and get back to me. We'll find someone to replace you if you decide to take the job. You may now leave"
I couldn't move or speak. He looked at me again and said, "Erm, I said you can leave now, thank you."
Was this a dream? I pinched myself and, no my dears, I felt the pain — it was real!

Dear You,
Choosing the fear of God is not always easy, especially when the world tries to make light of little compromises, but every decision we make shows where our heart truly stands. Integrity may not give instant rewards, but in the long run, it opens doors no one can shut. When we choose the fear of God, we choose to honour Him above convenience, money, or the opinions of others, and just like in this story, God sees, He knows, and He rewards.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” — Proverbs 9:10
