Darius I of Persia (born 550 B.C., reigned 522–486 B.C.), also known as Darius the Great, ruled the Persian (Achaemenid) empire at its height. The trilingual inscription on this cylinder seal reads, “I am Darius the great king.” The seal, cut from hard stone, shows the king hunting lions with the winged emblem of Ahura Mazda, the patron deity of the empire, protecting him from above.
