I once saw an interview with a Vatican exorcist and he was talking about this distinction. He said that unfortunately, he believes that many people who are mentally ill can be attacked or demonically attached and there is no way to know the difference. His main comment was "When a demon sees a schizophrenic, he most likely thinks, 'What's one more voice? They won't know the difference.'"

While the Vatican exorcist spoke of a "distinction" between mentally ill and demon possessed persons, he was unable to pinpoint precisely what that distinction was, in the event it was necessary for him to differentiate between one who is possessed or simply mentally ill. I would think that as an exorcist, he would not have desired to perform an exorcism on a person who was not demonically possessed.

Correct. Its why most exorcists now have an entourage of multiple people. The exorcist of Detroit has two Doctors, one strictly a medical doctor and the other a psychiatrist. He also has people who have the gift of discernment, just in case the demon chooses to manifest in ways that are not noticable to the average person.

I am glad to see, at the very least, there are even some priests who are able to distinguish between demonic possession and mental illness, and they take necessary precautions to circumvent exorcisms being performed on people not demonically possessed. Thank you for sharing this information, as it is beneficial toward my learning, as well as all those who have commented on this post or take interest in this topic.

Possession, no. Oppression, yes.
