My wife had knee replacement surgery about 30 years ago. Her knee has always been swollen, but until recently she has had little trouble getting around. About a year ago her entire leg swelled up and is now twice the size and weighs at least twice as much as the other leg. It makes it difficult for her to walk and to get in and out of bed.

We have been to several different specialist doctors, and the only diagnosis has been that she has fluid build up in the leg. The only treatment that they recommend is wearing compression socks. After over six months, we see no improvement.

Can anyone help?

Has she been checked for blood clots in her leg and ankle? That can cause your leg to swell up.

I do not know if this will actually be useful to you - I have not researched it - I just keep seeing it show up as one of those forced ads on youtube videos. It suggests that leg swelling may be related to inflammation of lymph nodes in the knee or some such similar thing.
