And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. And as a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by the craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up on all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

It has been said here on this site that there are no prophets because the bible has been completed, and there is no more revelation of Christ Jesus to receive. This passage says that Jesus gives first apostles, then prophets, then evangelists, and then pastors and teachers. Now Paul did not say that Jesus gives one of these, or maybe two of these, but He gives all four of these offices. If one is not needed today because we have the completed bible, then none of these are needed. Therefore, the saying that there are no prophets because we have the bible is not supported logically, because we still have need of evangelists and pastors and teachers. You cannot have some and not the others, unless you are a judge of the scriptures, which makes you a judge of God.

I won't even go into the second part of this passage, except to say that the next most important part of this is the last part, where these offices are given for one reason, that the body should grow up into all aspects of Jesus Christ, who causes the whole body to to grow by building itself up in love.

If we are going to believe something, it at the very least should not make God a liar. If there are not prophets or apostles any more, then there are also no evangelists or pastors and teachers.

In Christ,

In Christ,
But where there are prophecies they will cease; where there are tongues they will be stilled, where there is knowledge it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophecy in part but when perfection comes the imperfect disappears

1 Cor 13:8-10

Has perfection come? If it has knowledge has been done away with. I doubt many on cc would want to agree with that!

Knowledge, prophecy and tongues are all lumped together here by Paul. If one has gone they all have

And we know that the perfect is Jesus, and when He comes, we will be changed to be like Him. In that day, prophecy, knowledge, and imperfection will be done away with.

Galatians 5:16-26 (New King James Version)

Walking in the Spirit
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit,
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

YouTube - "We Will Stand" By Russ Taff

Your my brother your my sister so take me by the hand. Together we work until He comes. there is no Foe that can defeat us when we're walking side by side. as long as there is LOVE we will stand.

quote - 'In (v.11), Paul identifies the gifts spoken of in (v.7). They are gifted men given to the church. There is an intensive pronoun given in the text. 'He Himself gave' and no other. He gave some saints as apostles. The word speaks of the primary sense of the twelve apostles and in a secondary sense of those that proclaim the word of Go today. 'Prophets' refers not to those that foretell the future, but to preacers and expounders of the word. 'Evangelists' are the traveling missionaries at home and abroad in foreign lands. The word 'pastor' is poimen, a shepherd. The words 'pastors' and 'teachers' are in a greek construction that indicates and refers to one individual. The one who shepherds God's flock is also a teacher of the Word. having both the gift of shepherding and teaching the flock. God's ideal pastor is one who engages in a didactic ministry, feeding the saints on expository preaching, giving them the rich food of the Word.

These men are given to the church 'for the perfecting of the saints'. The word for 'perfecting' is katartizo, which means to equip for service. These gifted men are to specialize in equipping the saints for 'the work of the ministry', for ministering work. This is in order that the body of Christ might be built up by adding new believers to the church through that work and by building up the saints.'- unquote

THAT APPLIES TO THE AGES TO COME. WHEN THE WICKED IS PERISHED AND WE ALL REIGN ON THE EARTH, THOSE THINGS WILL CEASE.

Jesus is NOT the perfect spoken of in 1 Cor. 13.

The text says THAT WHICH not He who.

The perfect is contrasted with the partial... tongues, knowledge, and prophecy.

The term perfect means complete, whole, or mature.

Sounds like the word of God to me. When it was completed. we had Gods complete word. Signs and prophesies would nbot longer be needed and would "fade away"

Jesus is the perfect. Everything that will make the transition into eternity will be after the pattern of Jesus, and will have its existence in Jesus, and will even exist for Jesus.

Your words are false. There is no perfection outside of Jesus Christ, because God choose that it be this way.

yes, but when we enter eternity. none of the gifts will be needed, for we will all be perfect. and in need of non of them. So it can not be going into eternity.

As the poster said. "That" not "who" is perfected.

Scripture is not perfect? What other "thing" is supposed to come which could be perfect?

People who love and study their Bibles know what the word perfect (in fact what the passage, indeed the whole chapter means):

1 Corinthians 13
but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

perfect:

τελειον adjective - accusative singular neuter
teleios tel'-i-os: complete (in various applications of labor, growth, mental and moral character, etc.); neuter completeness -- of full age, man, perfect.

here's the IDENTICAL word used:

1 Corinthians 2:6
We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

τελειοις adjective - dative plural masculine
teleios tel'-i-os: complete (in various applications of labor, growth, mental and moral character, etc.); neuter completeness -- of full age, man, perfect.

It's referring to our ability to be "completeness -- of full age"
because that which was to come (The Canon) would be "completeness -- of full age"

The Bible is perfect, only the living stones of the church need some refining and GOD through the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT and reading and understanding of the BIBLE will do that:

Hebrew 4: 12

" the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow and is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart."

Let God's WORDS do the heavy lifting ;)

John Newton (1725 - 1807)

" What thou shalt today provide, let me as a child receive; what tomorrow may betide; calmly to thy wisdom leave. tis enough that thou wilt care, why should I the burden bear?"

I prefer to be a child of GOD then any other title this world may bestow.
