Falling asleep in church (not literally)

I feel like pastors could really connect with people if they spoke on real life struggles. Example, drug addiction, sex before marriage, abuse, porn etc.. recently we had a guest pastor who touched lightly on real life struggles and he had everybody on their feet cheering. I will honestly fall asleep in church because the sermons are all over the place and just don’t apply to me half the time. I feel if churches want to start bringing in younger Christians, they should change the way they preach. Talk about bullying and overcoming them. Talk about social media addictions and how that hurts our relationship with Christ. Talk about work and Christian life balances. I don’t know maybe I’m the only one. I’ve found breakaway (it’s an app) to be much more helpful in my journey than going to church because it actually touches on real life issue.

Sometimes I’m so bored, sleepy and unable to connect with the message. I go downstairs into the fellowship hall and move around a bit. But I love to go to church to enjoy the worship, fellowship etc.

Dear Devin, when I was a boy, we had a lot of activities going on in our parish. There were masses especially for the teens and the young adults. There were what we called „liturgic nights“, a mixture of church service, meditation, prayers and even games. We also had early morning masses before school/university/work with a commom breakfast after the mass. Our deacon used to talk about the things that touched us as young adults or teens. In a nutshell, we had a rich spiritual life. In the two parishes where I lived later on I tried to do my very best to push for such a spiritual life, with quite some success. Can‘t you find a parish where it is like this? I am with „The Tao“ who encouraged you to go and look for a parish which fits for you. And here comes the kicker: if you do not find such a parish, go to the priest where you always feel bored at church. Make suggestions about sermon topics which are interesting for you (and other young adults). Suggest a special mass once a week or once a month for young adults and offer your cooperation for the preparation. What do you think? Too ambitious? Think about your favorite bible verse: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely“
