A while ago (probably 2 or 3 years), I was a fairly new Christian and was involved with a great group of fellow believers. I developed some really great friendships during this time. Most of us have all moved on to a different season of life now, but I still like to keep in contact with them. Thats beside the point. When I was in fellowship with this group of people, I became close with a girl who I'll call Person X. Person X was on fire for God and I thought I liked her in a more than friendly way. Anyways, I prayed a lot about it and my intense feelings for her went away. Not what I was expecting, but it was for the best. :) I realized that what I loved so much about her was her love for God and His working through her.

My question:
Has anyone had a similar experience when they were a new Christian, where they thought they were falling for someone, not realizing what they were falling for was God working through that person?

By my understanding love is a conscious choice, a decision we make. You don't fall into it. If you could, then the logical extension is you can fall out of love. Take the example of God. He made the decision to love us when we were sinners when by all rights he should have wiped us from existence, and then started over. Instead he chose to love us, so much so that he sent his only son to be humiliated, tortured and finally to die on a cross. All this so that we could be cleansed of sin. It sounds like that person X was the sort of woman you should have married. Perhaps there was something that caused you to lose interest in her.

People touch our hearts in different ways and we love them for different reasons. Knowing which is which can be difficult, can't it? :)

Admiration of her belief, admiration of her works. Yes, I've felt this before. :)

Absolutely!

Actually, its probably why I'm still single. I experienced this same "feeling" when I was like 18 or 19 and it made everything else feel synthetic or artificial because the relationship that the girl had with God, just flowed into every part of her life.

My feelings for her were as pure as the driven snow BUT, she quickly grew bored of me. It was then that I realized that I had to become the very thing that I sought to find in someone else. I had to find the same passion about serving God, as I saw work out through her life, in my own life.

Agreed brother. It is definitely a strange world out there haha. I can't imagine thinking these things several years ago before I was saved.
