As someone who used the NKJV for several years, and now has started using the ESV (and appreciates both), for me much of it comes down to publisher quality. The NKJV had the hard Providence to be exclusively a product of the Nelson Publishing Company. Nelson is the sole copyright owner of the NKJV Bible. My experience has been that Nelson makes very bad Bibles. Bad in the sense of poor workmanship, cheap materials, and bindings (glued page signatures - rather than Symth-sewn). I went through four Nelsons over a two year span and in each instance the binding came undone. This was very annoying - something that just doesn't happen with Bibles published by Crossway and Allan.

The ESV, on the other hand, may be
too market savvy. It can feel forced at times, but they have a wide variety of formats, excellent publishers (Crossway in the USA and RL Allan of Glasgow, Scotland), and many helps (Study Bible, etc.). The ESV also has top rate smartphone/tablet apps, and an excellent website. It is very user friendly. Finally, so many church oriented materials (Sunday school, Bible study materials, etc.) have integration with the ESV, and not with the NKJV. Basically, the ESV won the race to replace the NIV. I'm glad for that (I dislike the NIV), but I would have also liked it if the NKJV would have won.

How do other CC members rate their respective translations, not for Bibical content but rather for publishers' quality - or lack thereof?

I like the KJV and the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version). The publishing quality of both these bibles is very good. Never read the ESV so I may check it out.

I'm more concerned with the accuracy and readability of a translation, than I am with who published it, and if their publishing methods are ones that I personally prefer.

I'll have to disagree that Nelson makes terrible Bibles (yes they do make mostly terrible Bibles but their signature series is fantastic).

As far as Catholic Bible publishing quality goes you have pretty much three options: bad, worse, and "Did Satan design this?". If you're looking for a nice soft-back leather Catholic Bible you're SOL, but if you buy a Catholic Bible from another country (especially Italy) there is quite a few very nice hardback leather Bibles you can get. Really the problem is there is no English speaking Catholic majority country so the Bibles tend to be not so great, but if you buy Italian, French, Spanish, or even German translations then the quality goes up considerably. Which is why I have a really nice copy of the German Einheitsübersetzung translation that I keep around.

Also if your Spanish (and live in Portugal according to your profile) why are you so worried about English translations?
