The Lord’s commandments were written for our benefit. He knew that if we committed adultery, committed murder, stole, bore false witness, or committed other sins, we’d get into trouble. He was merely trying to spare us that.

that is true and more than that the commandments were given because they express the very nature of God and all His goodness and so they bring glory to God
