I am, well was going to attempt on a project of learning C++. The interesting thing I found out was a good compiler was $1400. If anyone could help me or direct me to a free one that is still good or half decent, I would greatly appreciate it.

There are free compilers that are installed on every Linux system, if you're interested in picking up *nix along the way (which is fun in itself). Also, if you're a student, you can get a student edition for much less. I got Borland, then Microsoft Visual Studio very cheap that way.

I am not a student and im just learning this to better myself with computers, I am wanting to do some basic programs and I have found a few free ones but I still dont understand the one that I have

Get GCC (GNU C Compiler). You can just install it in Linux easily with most distributions, or in Windows you can do it with Cygwin: Cygwin . This worked for me. CodeBlocks is a good IDE, and it's also available for Windows. It works nicely with the GCC.
