The American government must not force anyone to accept gay marriages because in doing so they would violate the constitutional rights of many Americans to freedom of religion. However, we live in a nation where "all men (and women) are created equal" thus homosexual partners must be granted access to all the benefits as if a married couple. The obvious solution to this delima is an "all access" civil union which allows homosexual couples the same benefits of marriage without forcing others to accept something that violates their religious rights.
Unfortunately, the battle that is currently going on is being waged by extremists on both sides on of the equation; gays who will not settle for anything less than forcing others by law to accept their immoral lifestyles and conservative business owners who are using Christianity as a front to cover up the fact that they do not want to pay for marriage-like benefits to otherwise single homosexual employees.
Ultimately, this entire issue is about people putting their own selfish ideas and agendas over the best interests of the population as a whole.
