This is not scripture, but I think there is truth in it. If we go to God for help and then deny to use the instructions God gives us for our situation, we are not letting God help us.

My friend came to me in tears, saying that she felt so hopeless and worthless she was going to stay in bed.

I told her that her thoughts were not from God, and gave her God thoughts to use for her situation instead of these false ideas. She cried all the louder, telling me I didn't understand, and now won't speak to me. Did I do wrong?

It isn't Scripture, as you say, and I don't think we can help ourselves, truly. Experience has shown that a strong support system helps people overcome addictions and loss and whatnot. I think that when someone is in the situation your friend was in, it is then God wants them to go out and do for others and take the focus off of self. When we only see our issues, we fail to overcome.

I do see your point, though, about us listening and obeying God and, when we don't, having no one to blame but ourselves, but I don't think that really falls into the 'helping themselves' category, but I could be wrong. :)

Dear Father In Heaven,

Please help Red Tent with her friend. I don't know their situation Father but You do. Give Red Tent wisdom and love in dealing with this woman and the situation. Help her friend to be able to dwell on the fact that You love her so much that You sent Your Son, Jesus to die for her and that in Your eyes she is worth that much. Please help this depression to pass from Red Tent's friend and give them both peace - I pray in Jesus name. Amen

Dearst redtent..I dont think what you said was wrong...in fact its totally right..I think the problem is that she didnt want advice and bacically wanted someone to feel sorry for her..a hug and boohoo you.. we both know she will see you were only trying to help...sometimes advice takes a minute to sink in...she be back just dont give up on her...you say alot of wise words on this site and I dont think you should feel bad...im gonna say for you to keep doing what you do...

Sometimes we should be slow to give advice...did you listen to her whole story and ask her why she feels the way she do? Maybe she could have felt better if you just listened for a while?
