It seems like today more and more people are pushing against the church because of pain from the church. I'm hearing about how the Christians/the church are judging people rather than helping. I can speak from my own experiences where the judgement of my own or other peoples appearance or even that persons struggles with sin was met with shunning or gossip. Instead of an open armed welcome (which we're called to do) I keep seeing a disassociation from that person or persons. How can we respectfully address this issue? Why are so many of our brothers and sisters spitting judgement and hate first and how can we kindly educate them on what Jesus really says we should do when we don't agree with someone's life choices? Does it start with leadership? What are we called to do? I want to speak on this with my community but I also want to make sure I come correctly and humbly. What do you guys think?

Well, to start with, you just judged "the Christians/the church," so if you want to get a handle on how to deal with this, start there.

Truthfully, I keep getting stuck at that point. I do it too.

I agree with everything you said. I've said it many times on social media. However I do have to add sometimes the media portrays that bad and the absolute worse of people. Meaning, the worse examples of a group of people is what gets shown in order to make their point. A non Christian might see it and think that is how ALL Christians behave and that is not true. With that said, I agree. We preach love but sometimes don't act upon it. How would you bring someone to Christ if all they see is hate and judgement?

as the old saying goes, 'you can preach until you're blue in the face', but only by His Grace,
will He allow a seed to be planted...

Hello psinua,

And welcome! We often heard it said that those who've been hurt also hurt others in turn, those whove been judged also judge... altho what logic there is in that... i guess it parallels with the positive verse that says "
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets" (Matt. 7.12) which is lots, lots better.

To your question Does it start with leadership, we can perhaps say that while that is important, we should start with ourselves, for it is essential that we are humble and unjudgmental when we speak. We've also heard it said that salvation is more than accepting Jesus, and in fact living "holy" lives, different from our world and surroundings, and not wanting to blend in or appear like part of the system. In a way, that is standing out-- and irritating to some ppl, but we can still share and shine, and remain humble even when persecuted.
