The 11th Hour
Laborers in the Vineyard
Matthew 20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like [SUP][
a][/SUP]a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. [SUP]2 [/SUP]When he had agreed with the laborers for a [SUP][
b][/SUP]denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. [SUP]3 [/SUP]And he went out about the [SUP][
c][/SUP]third hour and saw others standing idle in the market place; [SUP]4 [/SUP]and to those he said, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ And
so they went. [SUP]5 [/SUP]Again he went out about the [SUP][
d][/SUP]sixth and the ninth hour, and did [SUP][
e][/SUP]the same thing. [SUP]6 [/SUP]
And about the [SUP][f][/SUP]eleventh hour he went out and found others standing around; and he *said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day long?’ [SUP]7 [/SUP]They *said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He *said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’
[SUP]8 [/SUP]“When evening came, the [SUP][
g][/SUP]owner of the vineyard *said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last
group to the first.’ [SUP]9 [/SUP]
When those hired about the eleventh hour came, each one received a [SUP][h][/SUP]denarius. [SUP]10 [/SUP]When those
hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; [SUP][
i][/SUP]but each of them also received a denarius. [SUP]11 [/SUP]When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner, [SUP]12 [/SUP]saying, ‘These last men have worked
only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.’ [SUP]13 [/SUP]But he answered and said to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? [SUP]14 [/SUP]Take what is yours and go, but I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. [SUP]15 [/SUP]Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with what is my own? Or is your eye [SUP][
j][/SUP]envious because I am [SUP][
k][/SUP]generous?’ [SUP]16 [/SUP]So the last shall be first, and the first last.”
Signs of Christ’s Return
Matthew 24 Jesus came out from the temple and was going away [SUP][
a][/SUP]when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him. [SUP]2 [/SUP]And He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”
[SUP]3 [/SUP]As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what
will be the sign of Your coming, and of the [SUP][
b][/SUP]end of the age?”
[SUP]4 [/SUP]And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. [SUP]5 [/SUP]For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the [SUP][
c][/SUP]Christ,’ and will mislead many. [SUP]6 [/SUP]You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for
those things must take place, but
that is not yet the end. [SUP]7 [/SUP]For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. [SUP]8 [/SUP]But all these things are
merely the beginning of birth pangs.
[SUP]9 [/SUP]“Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. [SUP]10 [/SUP]At that time many will [SUP][
d][/SUP]fall away and will [SUP][
e][/SUP]betray one another and hate one another. [SUP]11 [/SUP]Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. [SUP]12 [/SUP]Because lawlessness is increased, [SUP][
f][/SUP]most people’s love will grow cold. [SUP]13 [/SUP]But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. [SUP]14 [/SUP]This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole [SUP][
g][/SUP]world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Be Ready for His Coming
[SUP]42 [/SUP]
“Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. [SUP]43 [/SUP]But [SUP][
af][/SUP]be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be [SUP][
ag][/SUP]broken into. [SUP]44 [/SUP]For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think
He will.
[SUP]
45 [/SUP]“Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his [SUP][
ah][/SUP]master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? [SUP]46 [/SUP]Blessed is that slave whom his [SUP][
ai][/SUP]master finds so doing when he comes. [SUP]47 [/SUP]Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. [SUP]48 [/SUP]But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My [SUP][
aj][/SUP]master [SUP][
ak][/SUP]is not coming for a long time,’ [SUP]49 [/SUP]and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; [SUP]50 [/SUP]the [SUP][
al][/SUP]master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect
him and at an hour which he does not know, [SUP]51 [/SUP]and will [SUP][
am][/SUP]cut him in pieces and [SUP][
an][/SUP]assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Parable of Ten Virgins
Matthew 25 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. [SUP]2 [/SUP]Five of them were foolish, and five were prudent. [SUP]3 [/SUP]For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, [SUP]4 [/SUP]but the prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps. [SUP]5 [/SUP]Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and
began to sleep. [SUP]6 [/SUP]
But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ [SUP]7 [/SUP]Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. [SUP]8 [/SUP]The foolish said to the prudent, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ [SUP]9 [/SUP]But the prudent answered, ‘No, there will not be enough for us and you
too; go instead to the dealers and buy
some for yourselves.’ [SUP]10 [/SUP]And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. [SUP]11 [/SUP]Later the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open up for us.’ [SUP]12 [/SUP]But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ [SUP]13 [/SUP]
Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.
