If you find out that there are out there some rumors or gossip about you, how do you manage that situation?

Live your life as though the world were the way it ought to be, that is how you show it what it can be.

In short, ignore it.

Hi Liz

If you discover people spreading rumors or gossips about you, the best approach is to ignore them. At the same time, continue in your Christ-centered life, live above reproach as much as you can and don't give the devil a foothold to accuse you. :)

If this person is truly damaging or tarnishing your life and it has affected your job, friends or family, then go to the Lord in prayer. Ask Him for wisdom and strength and if needed to, confront with the love of God. If possible, get a close christian sister to follow you along as witness.

Well in the old days, before I was a Christian, I would confront them with what I had heard and if it warranted it throw down with them over it. But the consequences were horrendous. The people I smashed hated me afterwards for one thing and wanted to kill me. This led to further problems as the cycle of violence escalated. Eventually I had a crew put together on my block and some of them had crews and well... you've seen it on television. It's not such a pleasant life when you know there's people out there networking with and in gangs that you smashed who want you dead.

Then I found another path... a narrow path and left that life and over the next few years people stopped hunting me to seek their revenge. As the years passed and I did good with my life and blossomed into a loving person, it all vanished into the background.

After that, I just ignored the gossip unless someone brought it to my attention and then I just nicely corrected whoever was informing me of who was saying what. This was usually in the workplace as non-Christians gossip a lot and use it as a tool to advance their agenda.

I normally just ignore it unless real life results are occurring and then I might take a more direct approach or if someone's telling me about it then I'll correct it but I do it as a Christian today... trying to use the mind of Christ in the matter instead of my best thinking that almost got me killed when I was a young man and would have if it weren't for God reaching down and claiming me when I called to Him and then leading me to safety. Peace.

wow everyone sounds so much nicer than me haha! I think it would depend. If what they're saying isn't that bad..I'll ignore them and correct people if they say anything. BUT..if it's something that's bugging me and I keep hearing about it..if it's REALLY bad.. I'm more likely to confront the person then..because of my straight forward nature I would say something..but I'd be polite about it..let my feelings about the situation be known..be clear and direct..that if they have a problem with me then they should tell me straight to my face..because I won't bite.. and then inform them that their opinion of me does not matter since my world does not revolve around them..then I would walk away without retaliation. I find that it's best just to be straight up about things..like you can voice how you feel without being nasty and mean in the process..I find nothing wrong with that if you do it like that..

There are many verses that tell us not to repay evil for evil or curse those who curse us. I think gossip falls in that "cursing" category.

If an opportunity presents itself to calmly address the issue and correct the erroneous information, I would..in a very tactful way. But, even if that opportunity doesn't arise, many times if you continue to treat the person who spreads such things as the Lord would have us do, it does exactly what the scripture says about "heaping coals of fire" upon the heads of our enemies and, many times, the person who has said some bad/untrue thing about you may come to you and apologize. :) Even if they don't, you will still know that YOU have done the right thing.

Besides, God heard what they said. ;)

At least for me, I've noticed that it doesn't really matter what you do, somewhere someone is going to be talking smack. From 3,500 miles away there were a lot of nasty rumors spread about me that really hurt and made me mad. But I decided to just let it go-rather than causing a scene I just didn't acknowledge it and continued to live life like I always do which would in effect prove the rumors wrong. Eventually a few people confronted me and asked about the rumors, then I told them the truth and was able to set the record straight. It took a while, but eventually everything worked out.

I loathe gossip... All it does is cause drama. I wish people would just go to the source when they have questions opposed to talking behind someone's back.

I'd feel honored. Little ol' me being talked about...?

Just kidding.

I'd ignore it. And if someone comes up to me asking about said story, then I wouldn't confirm any of it.

Koopa, there are some things you just won't be able to ignore...

Now, that said, what I would classify as silly stupid gossip like "Hey, did you hear that Koopa doesn't take showers or baths but once a week?" and, YOU SMELL...well, that kind of rumor may not be true but it will have a long life of TEMPORARILY having people, even friends look at you strange in the classroom and hallways. You will be viewed as contagion. LoL.

------()------
So, the above rumor will hurt SOME, but you can ignore it and maybe it will go away if the GOSSIP is wrong because you don't smell, or whatever. But, where real hurtful rumor comes into cold play is like a girlfriend , or, Yes, wife, saying something to a girl friend about their boyfriend or, in 'wife' casé, saying something bad about husband, or, situation, of course, could be vice versa, that DELIBERATELY is going to hurt.
Word wounds result from things said like:

"He is so boring on a date." (This could be spoke of her husband by the wife or girl friends speaking idly)

or

"Man, I wish he (husband) knew more about sex (wife to girl friend)."
----!----
Idle time is of the Devil. Why would you want to disperse a rumor that could allow you to be 'of the Devil.?'. II Thes. 3: 11-12) . Scripture classifies these words in the same way as WICKEDNESS: anger, deceit, envy, gossip, slander, murder. MURDER and gossip go together , green? Really?

Really.

------()------So do you really want to imbibe in such a wicked act that engenders horrible feelings, not to mention, consequences from God? I think not. I hope and pray not, too.

God bless you for reading this and realizing the error of your ways, if you've erred in little or BIG gossip. It's fine to err, that is human, but then it is NOT fine if you don't go to God to find out how He wants you to MANAGE the situation that's gotten out of hand greatly debasing someone's reputation/character.

"Sticks and stones will breaK my bones but words will never hurt me. ". Sure, you've heard that before.

And, ni, that phrase is so-so-so untrue , word wounds can be worse than physical wounds, which heal with cleaning, band-aids, antibiotic. Word wounds damage can ser a person's life back, ESPECIALLY if that person really respects you and fines out you said something horrible about them behind your back.

Rumors, gossip, slander are potent weapons of the Devil. And, those weapons murder, rape, pillage, destroy, lives.

Do not do Rumors, but, if you do, God is right now right by your side ready to give COMPLETE forgiveness. :)

In the case if it's not harming my reputation. I'll be acting as written in the Scripture:
Do not pay attention to every word
people say, or you may hear your
servant cursing you (Ecclesiastes 7:21):D
