Just imagine Jesus coming in our age and teaching in our streets today. How would he be received? We don't have to go any further than Matt. 5 to get a clear picture of the outcome. Look at verse 22. Have you called anyone a fool lately? If we can go to hell for that, think about all the really nasty stuff thrown at people today through the internet. Hell is going to have a population explosion. Look at verses 27 and 32. Adultery is a big one. The commandment against it was written by the finger of God on a stone table and placed in the sacred ark by Moses thousands of years ago (Ex.20:14,31:18,Deut.10:5). That's how important it is. Adultery is very dangerous and also very common. Can you imagine our Lord standing on a street corner in any of our cities and saying, "Thou shalt not commit adultery". How would that be received? Verse 44 would be another tough one to hear, "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute you". I believe most of us try to live up to this standard but sometimes it takes a lot of soul searching to get there or to try to get there. Our Lord expects us to put away our pride, which is the cause of most of our downfalls, and to follow him. Matt. 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. We all have to make the choice given to us in Matt. 7:13-14. Do we choose the wide gate that leads to destruction or the narrow gate that leads to life? It doesn't really matter how Jesus would be received in our streets. What really matters is how he's received in our hearts.
