And what exactly does this mean if this is true?

I am conflicted about this because this is translated differently in two different translations.

1 John 5:19
English Standard Version
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

1 John 5:19
King James Version
19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

Don't know what to make about that.

I do know this though:

1 John 5:18
King James Version
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

So apparently Satan does not touch Christians. Satan might elsewhere be described in the Bible as the anointed Cherub which covereth if the passage in Ezekiel 28:14 is about him. If this is true this might explain Satan's ability to influence the earth, perhaps in his original function he was meant to bring good tidings or love to everyone? I don't know, just something that seems sensible to me considering this verse. This might just be a poetic descriptor though, not being about him at all actually. In any case he doesn't seem to influence Christians at all.

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Satan cannot be everywhere at once. As a result he seeks to collectivize the whole world to leverage his influence. Here is an interesting free pdf "The Satanic History of the World"

There's a key to understanding 1st John. I don't have time right now to get into the proof texts, but will summarize it for you.

There are two parts to us. The old man that sins and the new nature of the born again spirit.
When we act under control of the flesh we sin , 1:8-9.
When we walk in the spirit we are not sinning. There are branches of holiness denominations that teach the false doctrines of sinless perfection. That wrests the verses out of context.

Then there are some groups and others who believe your chosen passage 1st John5:18 must mean "do not practice sin", because it's evident that people sin after salvation. What they do to understand the book is to change the traditional text to conform to their lack of understanding the plain KJV. This is one of the dangers of using multiple English translations from the critical text or changing the traditional to conform with misunderstood doctrines. See the promises at the very end of Revelation.

Is your confusion that you think believers are part of the world out of which we have been called? We are not of the world.

The world does not know God.

Jesus' words in John 15 verse 19 and John 14 verse 17 ~ If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.

1. The word "lies" is used in the sense of resting on, not in the sense of not telling the truth.
2. I say this often, because it is true: taking one scripture and trying to understand it is risky. John says in the same epistle that anyone who has no sin is a liar. So we need to know what the verse means, not only what it says. The correct translation is "continues to sin". (KJV has a lot to answer for). Those who are born again have a new nature that hates sin. That does not mean that they never sin. But is no longer a sinful lifestyle. Before the person is saved, they do not consider themselves sinners. That's why we need the conviction of the holy Spirit.
3. Satan is no longer the covering Cherub. That was Lucifer, the Light Bearer, before he rebelled against God. You can read this in Isaiah 14 as well as Ezekiel 28.
4. Satan does not influence Christians? Again, you need to study God's word. Satan is the enemy of our souls (1 Peter 5:8). Satan thwarted Paul (1 Thessalonians 2:18), Satan fires burning darts at God's people (Ephesians 6:16)

There are conditions to know the full protection of God. Countless Christians suffer terribly because they believe Satan's lies instead of God's word. Satan cannot harm our born again spirit, but the real battle is in the mind. (2 Corinthians 10:4 & 5)

Christians alone are freed from the power of sin (the evil one). The rest of the world is under its power

The sting of death [is] sin; and the power of sin [is] the law. 1 Corinthians 15:56
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, [even] to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. Romans 7:4
For sin shall not rule over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. Romans 6:14

Since the cross, Jesus has all authority. He shows up in Revelation with 2 new keys on His belt: the keys to death and hell. So while the evil one still has influence, it is waning. The gates of hell, according to Jesus, are impotent to stop Him from His task of building His church. Doesn't sound to me like Satan is in charge.

But Jesus does give the devil authority to deceive those who are not of him

"World" there means the systems or structure of the world not people. It's how we can be in the world but not of the world.

When it is written "God so loved the world..." it's not the systems or structure of the world that He loves. It's the people.

Same word. Different meaning.

14 You were an anointed guardian cherub.

I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God;

in the midst of the stones of fire you walked Ezekiel 28:14

Talks of how high Lucifer position was in heaven. He might have been the closest to angel to God. That would explain why Lucifer was called light bearer or light bringer. When Moses was in God presence on Mount Sinai his face began to shine so he wore a veil Exodus 34:29-35

the first and foremost sin of Satan. To be God in place of God. A Mighty and handsome Angel of God, created with free will tool. A leader of other Angels, put in charge to guide other Angels. Yet, Pride to want to lead brought in rebellion, has bewitched us the people ever since. the fall was Angelic and was before we the people were ever on the scene,,Satan having other Angels under his control to this day as fallen still, God calling all to turn to God in belief to God's love and mercy for us all, revealed by Son Jesus as we are forgiven in his death alone, everyone Hebrews 10:10 1 John 2:1-2, 12, and read to verse 27 please.
See Eve, was then pleased and saw the fruit (not to eat) as good to eat. When she heard (Adam there with her) that she would be like God and would not die!
Pride entered and has ever since been entering people ever since. No humility to serve God. No, not all, unless one see to let go and only trust God even if in poverty, will we? Trusting God all in all over it all, whom desires no one to perish, loving us all to take this sincerely and love all is the call, yes even those that you might hate or not like over their dung done to you as well.
Born new by God, one can want to pay back, and feel bad or good, yet can't in truth harm anyone because Father, Daddy is in them, not to stop them to decide no way to harm anyone since God chose by Son to save us all those that will be willingly to choose to believe God, personally. Those that will go through adversities too. Evil can't touch them only try to. We get to decide to not let it trouble using our new given mindsets, that only trust God in all things to work out, even though we might have physical problems. At least me, thank you Trust to god to see from Daddy's view thank you Father
Luke 21:4
for all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.
read the from verse 1 please and forward to verse 15, thank you then to the end of that Chapter

Demon spirits cannot live within a Christian because the Holy Spirit lives there. However belivers are still bothered with sin. Some will claim they no longer sin but thats isnt true.

I can not claim perfection, I am not perfect, yet God is and went to that cross and shed his blood once for all. God, by Son made us each as if we, no one ever sinned, read it in Col 1:21-23
I see this, prior to this happening the cross and the resurrection of Son, we all could not be perfect and those that believed the Messiah would be here and save us Hebrews 11, today and since the cross, has come and reconcile all as forgiven presently for ever presently. This is in place now forever for us all to believe God or not, that is the free choice to choose. Still Yet been in unredeemed flesh I still can't, not completely anyways, after the cross. Yet, by God we get a new view and new Law, Hebrews 7:11-12 and these born new, do not harm others ever again, Not on purpose ever, that is what I have been learning from God, seeing this imputed to me as in 1 Cor 13:4-7 I can't because God forgave me first 1 John 4:19

I have two Children physically. I get told One gets to live and the other has to die. I say no, I can't choose I love them both. I get revealed their failures, even the one's I know not of, and get told again Choose!
I reply, I can't, leave my children alone, "Pick Me" I will go in their place?
Then wisdom replied to me, Now you understand God's heart. loves us all, so he went in place of everyone else's place of deserved death for us all, to give new life in his risen Life. Not a few as religion chooses to choose, no thank you. God is fair to us all. Choosing we each are worthy of Love, even those worst sinners too, Thank you Father, wow, woe is me as in Isaiah 6:1-7
Thank you Father. Father desires form us all to choose Daddy, PaPa, Father, where true love resides for us all, thanks
