Why was Jesus baptized? He was sinless (2 Cor 5:21, Heb 4:15, 1 Jn 3:5 1 Pet 1:19, 1 Pet 2:22). And had Zero repent from.

John the Baptist was a priest & prophet:

Matt 11:9 Jesus asked, what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
(MY NOTE: Jesus says; John the Baptist was a prophet & MORE)

Luke 7:26 Jesus asked, what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
(MY NOTE: Jesus said; John the Baptist was a prophet & MUCH MORE.)

Here the Lord is instructing Aaron His Chosen High Priest:

Lev 10:9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:
(MY NOTE: Priests of the Levitical order were not to drink wine nor strong drink, throughout their generations)

Here an angel of the Lord is giving Zacharias instructions regarding John the Baptist:

Luke 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
(MY NOTE: John shall drink neither wine nor strong drink & shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.)

1 Chron 24:7-18 King David orders 24 priestly divisions/courses that were then instituted during Solomon’s reign. This priestly rotation began in the Hebrew month of Nissan

Luke 1:5 John the Baptist's father, Zechariah, belonged to the priestly division of Abijah/Abia. (1 Chron 24:10) The 8th division/course rotation to serve 8 days Sabbath to Sabbath. A pure blooded priest, a cohanim to the house of Aaron

Luke 1:8-13 Zechariah was performing his priestly duties in the temple, at the alter of incense. When the angel Gabriel appears & tells him this wife Elizabeth (to old for childbirth) would have a son & they will call him John

God ordained/chose (Ex 28:1-2) Aaron, Moses elder brother. As High Priest (Num 17:7-8) & had him offer Two sacrifice's of atonement, on the 10th day of the 7th month, the Day of Atonement. So the yearly sins of Israel could be covered (not taken away Lev 16)

God specified that the sacrifice's of the Day of Atonement could only be offered by Aaron & the succeeding High Priests among his descendants. Two sacrifices were offered. A lot was drawn, one was sacrificed to the Lord.

Lev 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away into the wilderness:(see Lev 16:8,9,10,21 & 22 on transfer process). The Azazel Scapegoat was then sent into the WILDERNESS. Carrying away all the people sins imputed onto it. (Lev 16:8-10, 21 & 22). The people could SEE their sins being carried away.

John the Baptist confessed/announced: Behold the Lamb of God, that TAKES AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD. John then laid his hands on Jesus & baptized Him.

Where did Jesus go immediately after His baptism? Answer: The WILDERNESS! (Mk 1:12) Only the High Priest could enact this sin transfer process. (see scapegoat Lev 16:10)

All people are blessed to be able to have their sins passed onto Jesus thru John the Baptist. The role of John was to be the High Priest who represented humankind. Gods servant who passed all our sins onto Jesus (Mal 3:1, Isa 40:3, Num 8:7, Matt 3:1-3, John 1:6, John 1:33)

Later Jesus dies, making the ultimate one time sinless perpetually cleansing God blood offering/sacrifice.

Jn 1:29 (B) John seeing Jesus announced; Behold, the Lamb of God! Which takes away the sins of the world. John identified & certified. Jesus Christ the Lamb of God to be an acceptable sacrifice. Jesus under goes Semikhah/rabbinical ordination here as well. We saw him in the Temple at 12, now he's 30, that's 18 yrs & the 2nd confirming voice comes from heaven Matt 3:17. With the laying on of hands by John, the water purification/priestly/mikveh/baptism & the 2 voices. Jesus is now a Rabbi by authority of ordination.

John the Baptist was the chosen representative High Priest sent by God. The prophesied/foretold (Mal 3:1, Isa 40:3, Num 8:7).

The two priests meet face to face. When John baptized Jesus, he not only transferred the old covenant Priesthood to the New covenants "Great" High Priest. John also passed (transferred) all the sins of humankind onto Him, the Son of God, the NT Scapegoat who was sent to save sinners.

Lev 8:1-2 God tells Moses; get some anointing oil, vs 6 now wash (full mikveh/baptism) Aaron & his sons with water, vs 7-9 dress them up in Priestly garments, vs 12 put the anointing oil on Aaron's head to sanctify/set him apart for Priestly duties. Thus the ORDINATION/establishment of the Levitical Priestly order)
(MY NOTE: Aaron is full mikveh/baptized with water, then, anointed with oil. And Aaron becomes mediator between God & the entire Nation Cohen Gadol/High Priest, after the order of Levi (Levitical order)

God choose Aaron to be the 1st Levitical High Priest & God choose John the Baptist, whom God filled/anointed with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb (Lk 1:15). To be the last Levitical Cohen Gadol/High Priest

Aaron was anointed with olive oil [by Moses] & full mikveh/water baptized. Each a High Priest's Ordination requirement.

Jesus is anointed from Heaven with the Holy Spirit [by the Father], water baptized/full emersion. High Priest Ordination requirement.

When God's chosen High Priest John the Baptist laid his hands on Jesus. He imputed/transferred (see Lev 16:20-21) all the sins of mankind onto the God's chosen LAMB. When Jesus rises up: The Holy Spirit descends in a bodily shape like a dove upon Jesus & a voice came from heaven confirming Jesus is God's Son/chosen Savior (Lk 3:22)

Jesus Sin Atonement is universal. Offered to & appropriated by, anyone that places their FAITH (Rom 5:1-2) in Jesus Sin Atoning Death, Burial & Resurrection (1 Cor 15:1-4).

Why was Jesus baptized?
To fulfill all righteousness. Jesus is our high priest :D

All priests were to be ritually cleansed in a purification ceremony, a consecration before Divine service :)
