Hello Jonathan, how are you this evening? Well, actually, it is almost midnight here... anyways, have you read Genesis recently? It has quite a few stories in it, all of them quite fascinating. I love the story line starting with Abraham and his descendants being the tribes of Israel and Judah from the loins of Jacob, Abraham's grandson... Jacob was Joseph's father, and his brothers were exceedingly jealous of him because Jacob favored him over his other older sons, since Joseph was the child of Rachel, who had been barren until she had Joseph. His brothers conspired to kill Joseph but instead they sold him to a caravan heading to Egypt, where Joseph eventually was raised to be the second most powerful person in all the land, and saved Egypt and the surrounding countries from famine. It was due to the success of the Israelites in Egypt that they were eventually enslaved for more than four hundred years, and then Moses enters the scene, to demand of Pharaoh on behalf of God, to "Let my people go."
In all these stories there are many layers and complexities and also much foreshadowing of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. Abraham's son Isaac was a child of promise to Abraham and Sarah when Abraham was around the age of ninety nine, and Sarah, aged ninety, was also well beyond child bearing years and been barren all her life. Still, she bore Isaac as a fulfillment of God's promise to them, and through the line of Isaac's descendants was Christ to come as a blessing to the whole world, for He is the spotless Lamb, the perfect sacrifice, and his death was foreshadowed by the near-sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham on the same mountain where Jesus was later hung upon a cross to pay the sin debt of the world that we might be reconciled to God and attain to a life ever after through His resurrection. "God will provide."
Jacob was the second born twin of Isaac and Rebecca, who won his older brother's birthright for a bowl of stew and later conspired with his mother to obtain the blessing from his father Isaac intended for his brother Esau. Following the success of this trickery upon the aged and failing Isaac, Jacob left fearing for his life, and met Rachel, whom he fell in love with.
Rachel was the daughter of his maternal uncle Laban, who agreed to the marriage, but then Laban tricked Jacob into marrying his elder daughter Leah instead, after Jacob had worked seven years to marry Rachel. Not to be dissuaded, Jacob bartered another seven years of his life to have Rachel to wife as well, and so he was married to both sisters at the same time, preferring Rachel over Leah. Rachel was barren and jealous of Leah's ability to birth sons for Jacob, and so gave to her husband her handmaid to impregnate, and Leah, tiring of pregnancy, did the same. This is where the tribes come from. The youngest two sons are Joseph and Benjamin, from the opened womb of Rachel. Leah also had one daughter that we know of.
