PART I

There are five recorded miracles of Christ in which seven blind men were healed in different locations and at different times. Each of these narratives is different, and worth examining for the lessons contained therein. When men addressed Christ as “Thou Son of David” and included the word “Lord” they were implying that they believed He was the Messiah and also the Son of God.

Mt 9:27-31
Location: Outside Capernaum, a city in Galilee
How Christ was approached: Two blind men followed Him
What was said by the blind men: “Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.”
What was the response of Christ: “Believe ye that I am able to do this?”
What was the response of the blind men after that: They said unto Him, “Yea, Lord”.
How was the healing accomplished: Then touched He their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it unto you”.
What was the result: And their eyes were opened (instantaneous healing)
What commandments were given after healing: And Jesus [strictly] charged them, saying, See that no man know it.
How were the commandments obeyed: But they, when they were departed, spread abroad His fame in all that country.
What was the response of the people: Not recorded.
What was the response of the Pharisees: Not recorded since they may not have been present.

John 9:1-7: A Sabbath miracle
Location: In Jerusalem, outside the temple
How Christ was approached: Indirectly. The disciples asked why he had been born blind
What was said by the blind man: Nothing. He did not even expect to be healed
What was the response of Christ: When He had thus spoken, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.)
What was the blind man’s response after that: A theological discourse with the Pharisees
How was the healing accomplished: Instantaneously
What commandments were given after healing: Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
How were the commandments obeyed: And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
What was the response of the people: Mixed
What was the response of the Pharisees: Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

PART II

Mt 12:22-24; Lk 11:14-15
Location: Unspecified location in Galilee
How Christ was approached: Then was brought unto Him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb
What was said by the blind man: Nothing since he was dumb
What was the response of Christ: He healed him
What was the blind and dumb man’s response after that: Not recorded. Probably ecstatic
How was the healing accomplished: Instantaneously. Insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw
What commandments were given after healing: None
How were the commandments obeyed: Not applicable
What was the response of the people: And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the Son of David?
What was the response of the Pharisees: But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. (thus committing the unpardonable sin).

Mark 8:22-26
Location: Bethsaida in Galilee
How Christ was approached: And He cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto Him, and besought Him to touch him.
What was said by the blind man: Nothing
What was the response of Christ: And He took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when He had spit on his eyes, and put His hands upon him, He asked him if he saw ought.
What was the blind man’s response after that: And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.
How was the healing accomplished: Gradually. After that He put His hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
What commandments were given after healing: And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.
How were the commandments obeyed: Presumably as given.
What was the response of the people: Not recorded
What was the response of the Pharisees: There is no mention of Pharisees.

Mt 20:29-34; Mk 10:46-52; Lk 18:35-43
Location: Jericho
How Christ was approached: And, behold, two blind men [including Bartimaeus] sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
What was said by the blind men: Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.... but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
What was the response of Christ: And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?
What was their response after that: They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
How was the healing accomplished: Instantaneously. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight
What commandments were given after healing: And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
How were the commandments obeyed: Not applicable, but implied. ...and they followed him.
What was the response of the people: And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.
What was the response of the Pharisees: They are not mentioned.

As we can see, in some cases faith resulted in healings. In other cases the compassion of Christ brought about healing with no faith being applied.
