"METROPOLITAN MARK'S SUMMATION [AT THE COUNCIL OF FLORENCE]:
"In his summation, St. Mark also mentioned St. Dionysios the Areopagite (1st century), who
wrote: "There is one source of the pre-essential Godhead -- God the Father." Representing
the person attributes of the Divine Persons, Mark said that we introduce the Unoriginate,
the Only-Begotten and the Proceeding One from the Father.
"Mark, the divine fragrance of theology, then mentioned the last discourse of Christ to His
disciples, when He imparted to them the secrets of theology, saying, "When the Comforter
is come, Whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, Which pro-
ceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of me" [Jn. 15:26]. Commenting on this, he
said to the Latins, "Here, by three expressions, our Saviour had placed the three Divine
Persons in their relation to each other. Of the Spirit, He says, "When the Comforter is
come," of Himself, with the Father, He says, "Whom I will send unto you from the Father,"
and then, of the Father alone, He says, "Which proceedeth from the Father." Do you not
see a strict exactness in the divine doctrine? ... He did not say, "the Holy Spirit WHich
proceedeth from Us," ,,, Consequentlt, no Filioque can be implied here. Evgenikos then
said that the addition to the Creed was "the first cause of schism." He felt that to ever
achieve union this innovation must first be removed.

then read select definitions from the Ecumenical Councils that confirm Orthodox
