Mic question...

I'm on windows 7 and my mic wont seem to work with anything other than Skype... For some reason Skype picks up my microphone very well where as the system all together doesn't. I can get some sound from the mic but not a lot and it is nothing but static and a little of my voice. I have tried mic boosting and things such as that anyone got any suggestions?
