“And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.”

‭‭Numbers‬ ‭21:8-9‬ ‭

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

‭‭John‬ ‭3:14-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the figures in the ot help us grasp the realities in the new now that Jesus has been revealed the figure is able to teach us out him.

in both cases what makes these things work is Gods declaration and invite of faith his word saved the people from the serpents like this

“the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.”

and because Moses heard and obeyed and informed the people of what God said would save them they responded and lived just exactly as God declared first before it happened

“And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.”

see this isn’t the law of works and it’s not according to thier sins they had already sinned that’s why he had sent the serpents

You can see how God desires repentance here very well and how he then provides salvation by faith ( he offers a word of saving grace ) when that happens

(they sinned constantly complaining )

“And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

(they repented )

Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.

( Moses intercedes for them being thier mediator between they and god ) And Moses prayed for the people.”
‭‭Numbers‬ ‭21:5-7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

it’s then that God provides the brazen serpent and that word of faith a figure and pattern foretelling what he would do for the world in Christ

until Moses prayed and God provides this they were all doomed

“And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.”

thats Gods answer to Moses prayer of intercession for the people on the desert of sin when they repented and confessed thier sins and asked for mercy , God then provides the way to be saved

Jesus is the fullness and truth and completion of that figure but he’s applied to all nations and God like he did then has said “ whoever believes in me will be spared from the wrath of God that’s in the earth according to the torture and murder of Gods begotten son

growing and boiling until he comes with fire and destruction on the world yet saving from this all who have heard and believed his word telling us about Jesus and salvation the word of the gospel

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor;

He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted,

to preach deliverance to the captives,

And recovering of sight to the blind,

To set at liberty them that are bruised,

To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭4:18-19, 21‬ ‭

the gospel is Gods word of faith that if we believe will save our souls and give us everlasting life and Jesus death is our atonement and the cross is like the serpent in the desert we can remember Jesus blood shed for oir sins
And have atonement and not die like when tbey looked at the serpent though they were wounded they lived
