Two years ago my husband was going thru some ongoing stomach issues; an annoying pain in the lower left side. He became obsessed with it. The worry started to take over; he went to the doctor about it several times, tried meds, nothing made it go away. It changed his demeanor; he was starting to become depressed. I tried everything I knew to do, endless talks, distractions to get his mind off of it, ignoring it, but, NOTHING worked!
One evening his dad invited us to church. Honestly, I didn’t really want to go, but we did (a few years prior I had asked him if he wanted to try out church and he turned me down so I didn’t go either and I let it go. I realize now I should have just went anlone and that was God inviting me and I turned him down. I’m glad He kept asking!) It was nice. The sermon was nice. We went back again the next few Sundays. Things still weren’t changing, that I could see.
One evening me and my best friend were doing our usual walk/talk routine and she knew everything we’d been going through. I told her we’d went to church a few Sundays she asked me of my husband, “how is he with the Lord?Maybe he’s calling him.” She explained to me that the Lord is not obligated to hear or answer a prayer if you are not His, that you have to confess and tell him you are a sinner and ask forgiveness and commit yourself to Him. She offered to help get someone to pray with us. I told her I’d talk to him.
I’ve always believed in the Lord but what she said hit different; that He didn’t have to oblige to me if I wasn’t His or committed and the confession of being a sinner and everything. So I talked a long time to my husband that evening. I told him what she had said and that if we did this we had to commit to it; this was a lifelong thing. I can’t explain why but it even got down to me telling him something that happened to me in my childhood that I had NEVER told anyone; not even my sweet husband who I’d been with for 23 years at that point and trusted with my whole life! I prefaced it by telling him I was ok and it hadn’t ruined my life (I now know God saved me from that ruining my life and I am so thankful for that). Things were kind of left at that that night. We went to bed.
At 5:40am that morning I was awoken with the urge to pray. In a quiet moment, my husband was still asleep, I touched where his pain was and I prayed and told God that I knew I’d done wrong and that I would do better and for him to please help me and my husband. A peace came over me and I knew right then and there that everything was going to be alright no matter what.
That evening I told my husband that I prayed and that it was going to be ok and asked my him if he’d like to pray. We did. I think he was saved then too; he just didn’t realize it yet.
His cousin, at church Bible Study (we had started going to that as well), showed him Romans: 10, 8-10 the following Wednesday from when we’d prayed. He just needed to see it. I realized that’s what my friend had told me, the week before and I was seeing it too. I said, “see, we’ve done all of that!” And that night we had confessed it to a small group in the church that we were saved. It took a few more months, but we asked to be baptized, and were a couple months after being saved.
Things slowly started getting better with his stomach, he got an appointment for a colonoscopy pretty quickly. It was totally clear, just a very spastic bowel, IBS diagnosis.
My life and his have totally changed. I love reading and study my Bible, I love my church. I have some things in my life I used to like to do that was wrong, I no longer have any desire for that.
I still have trouble sometimes though with doubt of my salvation. It runs thru my mind that, nothing major happened to me; it was all something that happened with my husband. I am a pretty mild mannered person; quiet and don’t bother anyone, no drugs or alcohol, nothing like that, no health problems. I guess it just makes me doubt because it wasn’t a major life event for me. I try to tell myself,(or maybe it’s God telling me) it kind of was a life event for me because what my husband goes thru I do as well; we are one flesh.
Anyway, that’s my testimony. I hope it helps someone that is doubting because their conversion was quiet and wasn’t because of a major life event. Thanks for taking the time to read. I’m glad I found this site.
