I grew up listening to Christian music an mostly enjoying it. Things like David Meece, Steve Green, Twila Paris, Rich Mullins, DC talk, Rebecca St. James... etc etc. While I was in the Navy I went to a Russian Orthodox church and another church that did the whole hymn thing, so I was out of the loop for about 8 years.
I recently returned from the Navy to my home town and I was scouting for a Church for my dad. I grew up in all of the Churches in this city. What I wasn't expecting to find was that the praise and worship in my home church had changed so dramatically.
At first I just thought that perhaps the Praise team liked repeating the same lines over and over again. Towards the end of each song the same thing would happen, they would take what I thought was a 5 minute song and stretch it to at least 10, by repeating slowly the hook in the chorus. When I left, I looked it up online I discovered that this is the way the song was written. The original artist milks the last lines with even more despondent tone and with the same repetitive nature.
Before the Pastor began his lecture I was not feeling well. I wasn't energized or provoked to consider the sheer magnitude of my God or the significance of my need for Him, I was half asleep and drained. It almost felt deliberate, because the lights were dimmed as the lyrics became more and more repetitive. I mean there is only so many times I can say "Our God" before it becomes mind drivel. It wasn't Our God is ''A healer" or ''The healer'' it was our God is healer, as grammatically distracting as that was, it kept me from thinking about my taxes while repeating the same lines over and over again.
After doing some research, I've found that this type and style of ''Worship'' has become very popular. Before I disappear back into my beloved Liturgical services, I would like to note that I have found hope.
Now I know there is really Good Christian Worship out there, the Likes of Paul Wilbur but it is rare.
Did I somehow miss where everyone else turned?
