OBEY YOUR PARENTS, in the fear of the Lord.

Respect and honor your parents, even the ones who may have left you or neglected you. Honor them as you would honor the Lord and he will be pleased with you. This is the first commandment with promise.

its says honor, not respect...two different things
i respect those who earn it but i try honor everyone

yeah, i respect my mom since she always been there for me, as well as my dad...but if it wasnt like that, i would have no respect for them at all...that's why it says honor and not respect, there are times when you lose complete respect for them, like if your dad beats your mom, you wouldnt have any respect for him, but you should honor him (meaning don't talk bad about him)

its hard for those who have gone through it, it would be hard for them to, but not impossible
 
Dictionary.com says that honor and respect go hand in hand. Honor is a high reverence or respect. Are we making up our own definitions to words here?

Hmm. I think the thing is that the word respect has evolved in meaning from what it was to what I meant by it.

I was talking about the American idea of respect. But as the other said, he is right in how he put it now, as I read in the bible how it was used.

I will have to agree to disagree here. You don't have to respect the decisions made, actions, words used; but regardless of this you should respect your father and mother. Respecting your parents is acknowledging that they have certain privelages as your parent. There IS a line to be drawn here, DO NOT TAKE THIS OUT OF CONTEXT! If you parents are leading you into sin, there is no honor or respect in that. The parent(s) will be held accountable and judged accordingly for leading their children in the wrong direction or if they hurt the child; hinder them by doing wrong/evil.

I wasn't looking for you agreement. I remembered where it was written that we should not have respect of persons. In the sense here it is completely different than what I meant to say. But in the way he uses it it fits into the biblical usage.

That is all. Not trying to imply one thing or another.

I am making no accusations of implication Ramon. I think that honor and respect mean the same thing as they always have, the meanings of these words haven't changed, the people have.

As far as I am aware, it is only written that God is no respecter of persons. If there is a scripture that says that we should not be a respecter of persons let me know.

Acts 10:33-35

33Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
34Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Deu 1:17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

Jas 2:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

There are others. But this shouldn't cause any strife. I had to go look for myself. And I understood what he was saying.

Respect= denotes both a positive feeling of esteem for a person or other entity
Honor= a : good name or public esteem : reputation

Thats the difference, many have mix the two but they are not the same...watch a few asian movies and you ll understand the difference between the two...when you honor someone your leaving their name and reputation high to the public, while respect the esteem you have for that person (more personal)

Yes yes. AMEN!! You understood this well. Joseph desired to do the same with Mary. He wanted to put her away privately so as not to dishonour her. I know what you mean.

But I wrote as with the modern understanding of respect. But yes, we understand.

The above is generalized and open to interpretation. Do you see how easily a child could take this and use it against their parents? A child using it to justify disrespect and disobedience to their parents, possibly telling their parents that they have to earn the child's respect or obedience?
