It is said that during this time, any animals left on the earth would have been killed by the water, then buried quickly under sediment.
After being buried, pressure from the water would cause them to decompose faster, thus creating oil from these bodies in shorter periods of time. I may be off on a few of the details here..but that's the basis of it..
