Hi all,

I joined this Christian Chat to ask of believers to please pray for me.

I am a 31 year old believer who has been CONSTANTLY having trouble staying true to the faith. For a couple of years now, I have been experiencing episodes of depression that last a couple of weeks. When I go for help with a therapist or church leaders, it seems to go well for a while, but then it eventually goes back to the depressive state.

It gets to a point where I become isolated, and indulge into sins from the past, such as smoking (which I have been on and off since I was 13), drinking and gambling. Also throw pornography in there for good measure, as I am a single male. I would then sleep in on the weekends, missing the services on Sunday morning, and continue in that cycle. It's driving me insane!

I have been in the word each morning. I am currently reading the bible cover to cover at my leisure, but I have dwelled on a few parts and have been praying the best I can (despite not wanting to most times).

I find it hard to try to mingle at church, I just have a feeling that I since I am going through this time, I can't connect with others because they'd either turn their back and not help or they'd speak "churchese" ( The old "I'll pray for you" and then walk away immediately, or "you need to be in the word and pray more".... even though it's almost impossible for me to do so...etc..)

My mind is so scattered as to what to do, that I just start feeling low. It's extremely hard to be me right now.

Thanks for the prayers all....I know the Lord will answer.....HE IS GOOD!

Hi Rick,

There are support groups that could be very helpful.

It's a lie of the enemy (devil) that tells you Christians would turn their back on you. If they are true Christians they will understand and try to help. It's the people that profess to be Christian that we have been rejected by. God is great and He will be there for you. I think you should ask for a private conference with your Minister and ask him for help. He might be able to connect you with a group of others fighting the same struggles that you are. Also, it will help if you are in a Church that believes in anointing and laying hands on you with prayer. God is the answer for ALL healing, including addictions and confusion.

I will pray for you!! God Bless and may He heal you and fill you with faith.

Honestly your addictions and some of the depression works directly with your relationship with God. Do you pray and read from your Bible every day? not just a verse but I mean actually reading and meditating in his word. If you are not then Doubt will overcome your life. you will start to doubt God and if hes even there. thats what happened to me.
Dedication to his word. Do you sit down and talk to God about your problems, difficulty's, and fears? not just praying but just venting to God to see how it work. And if you have been faithful with this get accountability. We have a addictions program at my church and every Friday night we have a meeting and people go there and talk about anything in there life that comes up. If someone falls everyone helps you get up.
This is how it would go for people to get unfaithful. first they would drop out of the program. then church. then there life gets wrecked,
Also why don't you try to help? Ask the church if theres any little thing you could do for them and try to make a difference.
The whole and entire point of being a Christian is our service. if we lack service then our entire faith means nothing
ill pray it goes well for you

James 4:8
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

You are not alone.Paul tells us in Romans 7:15-25 about how he struggled betweem his desire to please God and the temptations of this world and yet he was the first known missionary. David was a lowly shepard boy chosen to be king when still a child who commited adultry and murder yet his lineage includes Jesus Christ himself. Satan wants us to believe that somehow our sin is different from that of anyone else. He would have us to think that ours is worse. Sin is sin.God hates it but he loves us. He loves you and he will forgive you when you ask and he will help you if you let him but he does expect you to do some of the work. Make yourself go to church, make yourself speak to your church family, read your Bible and pray etc. even when you don't want to. You will find when you do this that you will be blessed regardless of the intentions with which you began. As for the "churchese",we've all been there if we're honest.Sometimes we're the speaker and sometimes we need an interpreter because noone stays on the mountaintop all the time. Faith is a journey.Hang in there. Don't give up. Keep trying to do the things that you already know are right. When you fall, accept Gods love and forgiveness then get back up and try again. My prayers are with you.

I think it is a testimony in itself that you can end off by saying that God is Good!!Cos that is your Spirit man talking. Its clear that there is a serious call on your life otherwise the enemy wouldnt keep on bothering you with the same old cycle. And that is exactly what this is-a continous cycle, usually the enemy will use what he knows works to get you to go back to who you used to be.You have to make the decision that you are going to live the abundant life that Jesus died so that you can have. The enemy is on an assignment everyday to try and ruin you but YOU decide you are gonna overcome in HIS strength...

I was stuck in this cycle for a while (a number of years) in fact sometimes it tries to creep in,my mind is often flooded with negative thoughts but I have to decide to listen and yield to the work of God in me..Try not to put urself in positions where you can sleep all day,or where you can be alone with your thoughts which lead you back into depression...

Pray for at least 1 godly friend that can encourage you and check up on you to see how your doing, someone who genuinely has a heart to see the people of God walkin in freedom...Who the SON sets free is free INDEED...You got ALOT of freedom you should be walking in,dont let the enemy steal your life in GOD!!!

I hope I have said something???God BLEss

Hi Rick, My name is Ed and I struggle with depression also brother. I was looking at Christian forums for someone to talk to when I came across this board because let’s face it loneliness is not a friend to those of us dealing with depression.. I was looking at the topics and saw depression and said now that’s a topic I understand! I try to share only things that I’ve seen work so I’ll tell you what’s worked for me, weed through it and if it helps then amen brother. I’m a bornagain so I brought a lot of baggage with me when I became a Christian but God has patiently been working through it all so take comfort when I say that he is working on you right now and does help those of us with depression and will continue to help us tomorrow and the next day and the next right up until it’s time to go home. I can say that because I see him do it for me everyday. Oh some days I wake up and somewhere in the night God has dealt the first blow to my enemy and I wake up and the sky is blue and I can here the birds singing, other days I open my eyes and my enemy is already there swinging without mercy. But God never leaves me (us) there. Never. Not now, not ever. My life boat for the past few years has been the book of Psalms. Don’t dismiss it lightly as “oh man he’s just recommending more Bible verses” No this has been my lifeboat brother. I hadn’t really spent anytime in the Psalms but as my last great depression hit me I felt oddly drawn to take a look. And I am REALLY glad I did. I started reading just a bit in the mornings which I HIGHLY recommend. Because it gets my mind started thinking about Godly things instead of my stuff.. I read it slowly about a chapter a day and was about 10 chapters into it but particular verses where really speaking to me so I took the time, started over and even though I wasn’t an underline or highlight the Bible kind of guy I started underlining the verses that I really connected with which turned out to be a great idea because I could zip back to them and find them to reread them in a hurry. What impressed me was how much I could relate to David, sure he was King but he started out a sheep herder, he was very much an average Joe in many ways and you can’t read the Psalms and say that David didn’t struggle, dare I say possibly daily. And I can relate to that. And yet God said he was a man after his own heart. So God loved him a lot even though he struggled a lot. But not just that you see the victory David had over and over because of God over his struggles. David over and over calls God his refuge. David seemed have no problem saying God I can’t do this but you can, rescue me and you see God do it over and over. What it says to me is that our God isn’t just a God that saves us once, he has no problem dare I say enjoys saving us from our troubles daily! That is something that I can hang my hat on! Because these are promises and God always, always keeps his promises.
That was the first time through. This last time I did two things, one, I met a friend in celebrate recovery (it’s not just for drug and alcohol abuse, I was there for my depression), I told him how well this has worked for me and we’ve been texting through the Psalms together each morning. Each morning we’ll text a few verses to each other that really speak to us. It’s very cool. Celebrate recovery is very cool as well because the first thing you learn is that your not alone, brother we’ve all got issues and those that say they don’t really aren’t being honest. We’re all fallen, every one of us, that’s how we’re born, but we can find God’s healing and it sure helps to do it together. But I digress.. the other thing I’ve been doing is writing my underlined verses for the day on index cards so I can take em to work. I’ve failed at the whole memorizing thing but I can take out that card and look at it a few times a day and think about what it says. It’s not memorizing but it does get the truth of those promises deeper and deeper inside my heart. And that I highly recommend..
Other things that help are the regulars for me, church on Sunday and a Bible study mid week. Sounds easy but it’s a must. At the height of my great depression before this one I’d made up a list of churches that had services on different nights so if I was getting the mental tar beat out of me I could get into a service that night. But that might be a bit extreme.. The reason my golden rule of church on Sunday, Bible study mid week works for me is one, worship, ever since I became a Christian, worship has been a very healing time for me, I think I cried as much as I sang the first year (and I’m a guy..). but something about it is just really really good for my soul. I feel so close to my Lord in worship. So as you can guess there’s worship on my car radio presets and I’m probably that idiot singing in his car next to you and I don’t sing well BUT IT WORKS. I also have worship on an ipod at home but I always play it on an ipod player and sing not just listen. The hearing and the singing have something that really works for me. And number two of course, (reasons for being in church on Sunday and Bible study mid week) is hearing Gods word spoken.. not only does the Bible say (a promise) that God’s word will not return void (it will never go out and not achieve what God wants it to), but so many times God has spoken something through a preacher that I swear was for just for me, for that moment. But God’s like that. He does truly care about us very personally and very individually. Well these are some of the things that I’ve found that work for me. God bless you brother.

Sir; I had areal hard time in youth, you know, after a particular hell and my decision then to always follow i mean OBEY it was 40 yrs since leaving Satanism to hlding my heart in my hand once and for all up to my true and TRULY(hE IS LIFE0 risen Savior I still h"hear" the Enemy but now know as a babe in Christ His gift finally of knowing right from wrong(mostly) and the Truth( His and Himself) from lies. we cannot listen whether "in our heads" or the lie attack that they somehow reach our ears whats important is now knowing There Is No Truth In Them, The Lord knows our every weakness Hell WILL NOT prevail against any one of us. Struggling NOW with anti-jesus telling me you ate chocolate cake! Seducing spirits too'come this way,its where youre going" What does Christ say DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THEM OR THEIR THREATS believe in the Lord with a pure helpless heart read over again Davids cries for help and Our Lords anwer also now as we (you too) are End Time saints, REMEMBER JOB!easy said huh? but from one sometimes crying and being rescued and held in his arms all day everyday In This Place(like Sodom is His Word to allof us now at the End and must endure what Lot has or JOB or Noah truly.
