I really need someone's input. My spouse has an interest in "ghost hunting" and watches a lot of the shows on TV regarding haunted houses and such. And, he has expressed a great interest in doing that himself. As a matter in fact he has recently gotten in contact with someone that goes around all over the country doing such and this person also claims to be a psychic...(which I'll have to had my I am so very uncomfortable with all of this and my husband confronts me on this issue as to why I feel so uncomfortable about it every few days and I have tried sharing various scriptures and it doesn't seem to help. He doesn't believe those scriptures are addressing what he is talking about. (Also, about how the Catholic Church removed so much of our bible that it's not even funny).
He says he has an interest in ridding places of demonic spirits and does not necessarily believe that all spirits that move objects for example are evil. He tells of how he lived in a house when he was a teen where there was a stop sign on his wall in his room and it would spin around. Then his family would go off to town and come back and clothes from the closet would be in the living room all piled up. Then there was a bar where a cup of coffee would be sitting and then all of a sudden it would go sliding across the bar and stop real quickly at the opposite edge.
(Also, while we're at here...my husband is convinced that he's got some problems that need to be addressed and the only person he feels can help him is someone that could hypnotize him...
I would appreciate your input and perhaps scripture references and any prayer. Thanks so for your time and attention :)
Sincerely,

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh http://christianchat.com/#fn-descriptionAnchor-ais not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. 4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. (1 John 4:1-6)

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, http://christianchat.com/#fn-descriptionAnchor-cagainst spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints-- 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. (Ephesians 6:10-20)

Dear Bookworm21:

I was saddened to read about your problem. Since your husband seems unmoved by scriptural evidence, it appears that he may already be under the influence of evil forces. There is really little practical advice that I can give you except maybe this. Since he seems to really believe in the existence of spirits, ask him if he thinks he is stronger than the devil? Point out to him that while all spirits may not be evil (his belief), it would only take one determined demon to destroy him.

Not knowing the strength of his faith (it sounds like yours is much stronger), this may or may not have any effect. In any case, I believe that you should pray that God opens his eyes to the truth before it is too late. Jesus drove out many demons during His ministry. Perhaps the Scripture which might move your husband would be Christ's description of the devil, "Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!" (john 8:43-45, emphasis added)

God be with you in your struggle.

I agree with dmdave17. If your spouse is not a christian or is struggling with his faith that issue is the primary one. The ghost hunting and interest in psychics are secondary.Maybe the following scripture will catch his interest:
14And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him acertain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,15 Lord, have mercyon my son: for he is a lunatic, and sore vexed: for oft-times he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.17 Then Jesus answered and said," O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him hither to me." 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said "Why could not we cast him out?" 20 And Jesus said unto them, "Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye Have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place: and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." Matthew 17:14-21 KJV

Jesus saith unto him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

That there are demons walking the face of this earth with an intent and purpose to destroy lives and create a distance between us and God is biblical. The scripture that trust_in_the_name uses from Ephesians about putting on the whole armor of God is not only how we defend ourselves from these attacks but how we gain victory. Not only do we drive the enemy back but we live our daily lives in more than just survival mode.
Our pastors sermon a few weeks ago was on "Spreading it Out Before God". He said that sometimes we don't see the results we are looking for because we don't give it ALL to God, only bits and pieces here and there. He made some interesting points about praying in earnest, setting all things aside for however long it takes to spend that one on one time with God and giving him every little piece of the problem because he is the master problem solver. I had some thing in my own life that I had been struggling with for several years. I came home that Sunday and began laying it out. It took hours. I was up again at 4am laying it out some more, crying my heart out to God. At 9am Monday morning, PRAISE GOD!! I began to see the beginning of Gods answers to my prayers. I am still seeing His answer unfolding and being careful to stay in fellowship with him believing that His ways are best.
If you are interested in seeing this sermon online I can provide you with the information that you need. I have prayed for you and your husband already.

Hi! I was very interested in ghosts and stuff up until a few years ago when I experienced something and I think I might be able to help you some. I only accepted Christ as my savior in 2005 and before that I was very interested in ghosts, psychics and that sort of stuff. I will write more later because its very late here and I must be off to bed. In the meantime, just know that even though it is dangerous, it very rarely becomes anything worrysome.

OK, here's my take on the subject. I've played with ouija boards, have experienced hearing strange sounds that were unexplainable and have done a lot of reading and watching or listening to tv shows and radio shows about ghosts and psychics, demonic posession and the unseen realm (angels). There was a radio show I was listening to and the guest was a psychic who can see ghosts and she said that the reason ghost hunting is dangerous is because many spirits are looking for someone who will acknowledge and communicate with them, so when they notice someone who wants to communicate with them there is a chance that spirit will try to follow them home. She also said that ghosts in general are benign. They just want attention. They don't want to hurt anyone.

Now, as for trying to rescue ghosts (sending them into the light, or 'home'), I haven't heard anything about that being dangerous, or having bad outcomes. I hear that sometimes it works but the person doing it was always a psychic who could speak directly to the spirit.

The thing that made me stop my interest in these things happened around 2007. I got re-interested in ghosts because of all the new popular ghost hunting shows despite my being christian. Don't worry this next story isn't really scary. WOW, my cell phone just made a strange noise and it is 4:30 am. I really don't like writing about ghosts or talking about them at all. I just turned on the radio so its not too eerily quiet. Ok, so here's what made me stop my interest. One night I was alone watching one of the ghost hunting shows on tv and I started hearing some noises from the roof/attic area. I assumed it was just some squirrels and didn't pay much attention to it. The noise came back every night and sometimes the sounds became very loud and heavy like someone was stomping their foot. It worried me a little but still I believed it was just some animals, maybe some big squirrels. Well one night I was alone watching another ghost hunting show and they were talking about how thier cameras would stop working and their equipment would go crazy and I remembered how ghosts supposedly can make light bulbs burn out. I had to use the bathroom right after I had that thought and while I was in there I thought to myself "I will really freak out if the light goes out in here" AND IT DID! I didn't really freak out. I just sort of chuckled to myself, then tried to convince myself that its just a coindence that the bulb burned out at that time. I flicked the switch severeal times to see if it would come back on. It wouldn't. Ok, so I stopped watching that show and I tried to put the incident out of my mind. Later that night I had to use the bathroom again and I thought to myself "I will freakout if the light now works." IT DID! Yes, the light came on, but it came on wierd. It sort of slowly came on. That got me to pray to the Lord and ask forgiveness for being into those ghosts and stuff. Now, back to the noises. One night I was alone again and the noises started up and this time I was afraid they were something supernatural because of the lightbulb incident and the heavy stomping was loud again and it really got to me so I got on my knees and loudly prayed the Lord's prayer (Our Father) out loud. Halfway through the first Our Father the noises stopped. I prayed two more just for good measure and I also sprinkled some holy water throughout the house. The noises never came back.

So, like I said its usually not dangerous but there is that small chance that it could lead to annoying disturbances, or worse if it becomes a rare case. I guess the best way to convince your spouse to stop is to relate to him stories of people who have gone down that road and have regretted it for one reason or another. I will try to find more stories for you that you can tell him. Another thing is to fill his time with a different hobby. I don't know what but almost anything would be better. Hope I have somehow helped you.

Dear Sister in Christ

I am concerned for you and your family. Do you have children? Mine are grown and gone but while they were at home I allowed some of what you are talking about in my home. I allowed a friend (quote unquote) to come into my house and read my fortune with playing cards. She said she was a white witch, (good powers, NOT) I thought it was all in fun, I was interested but not really believing. To make a long story short, it took 12 years to clean up that mess. In the meantime my daughter had been possessed, my husband had been possessed and I was almost killed several times by demon carrying people. My yougest was tormented in her sleep until I taught them how to call on the name of Jesus in their sleep. I had a se'ance once, and in the se'ance someone suggested I get hit by a car so they could call me back. I was struck by a car one hour later. I am not saying all of this to scare you. How ever God tells us " His people perish for lack of knowledge. Whether you believe it or not will not stop them from harming you and your family. Trust_ in_ the_ Name wrote to test the spirits. If they say they are not from God, then they are of the devil. The Word says no one comes back from being dead. Luke 16:19 If it is not human, it is an angel or a demon. If Satan can convince anyone that one scripture is not right, it will make you doubt the rest of the book. Not all demons walk up and say they are demons. Again if they can convince you that they are from the past then the Word is not true. That is one of the reasons they walk among us. The other is to devour the would be spiritual warrior before he or she can become a real threat. 1 Peter 5:8 Maybe you can use his interest in the spiritual, you and he look up scriptures about it if he really wants the truth. I will pray for you and stand in agreement that God will show your husband the truth. If your husband believes in God, tell him if he really wants the truth to ask God to show him the truth and He will. God is good like that. In Jesus name peace be upon you and your home until God shows the truth.

As for dabbling with the occult, you should study when King Saul (old testament) tried to call up I think it was the prophet Elijah....

As for trying to cast out evil spirits, your husband is really going to want to know which side of the fence he's on. Either God's side or the worlds side.... there were 7 sons of a guy named Sciva in the book of Acts that tried to cast out demons like they'd heard Paul and Jesus do... long story short, they got their tails whooped and kicked out of town by the demon possessed man because the demons laughed at them because they didn't recognize them as belonging to Jesus.

You might work on studying this with your husband. Another suggestion, since you are the wife and want to not be his "mom".... ask him if he will commit to doing a bible study on it with you first before he lets himself experience anything else. Go to your nearest Christian books store, or online, or ask a pastor to help you pick out a very good study that would be right on target for you guys. Pray pray and pray... and believe that God's word is going to divide right from wrong.

It was the prophet Samuel. :)

Saul then said to his attendants,"Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her".

"There is one in Endor,” they said.
So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.”
But the woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?”
Saul swore to her by the LORD, “As surely as the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this.”
Then the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?”
“Bring up Samuel,” he said. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!" ( 1. Samuel 28, 7-12)

Just a tiny correction on that. ;)

-God Bless-

You need to protect yourself and if you have any children. This is serious stuff. But, one important thing, Jesus won over satan and has more power. So all you have to do is quote scripture and the devil and his demons will leave. satan does not have more power than you quoting the work right back at him, he will have to flee in the face of the name of Jesus. Remember that. What will probably happen is your husband is going to get the hell scared out of him right back to Jesus because this is nothing to play around with.

Dear Bookworm,

There is a vast difference between a religion and a relationship. Jesus did not die for religion, ie. Catholic Church. He died for a relationship between you personally, and himself. All of the suggestions to you mean nothing if you are not grounded in Christ. He and he alone is sufficient; human beings can add nothing to what he has already done, nor can they subtract anything. On the Cross, Jesus cried out, "It is finished." He did it all for you and for me. The Catholic bible, by design, is suited for Catholics. The Christian Bible, by design, is suited for all believers in Christ according to the Gospel, which means, Good News. Paul said in the Bible that any other Gospel is heresy. Jesus did not say "Follow the Catholic Church, or the Temples of the Jews. He said, "Follow me.""I am the way, the truth, and the life."

You cannnot change your husband's views until he is ready. But you can change yours. You must do what Jesus calls YOU to do by His Holy Spirit. When he watches how you follow the Scriptures in your own life, you will plant God's seeds in his. Pray earnestly that God will water them so that your husband can grow in the wisdom and maturity of Christ. It cannot be us; it must be Christ, or everything you do will be in vain. Look at the Scriptures, read them so that you will grow, and so that your husband will be a witness to your Christ-like actions. Jesus said not to be a hearer of the Word only, but a doer. "Faith without deeds is dead."

If you are not saved, read in the Book of John, where Jesus commands us to be born again. Without God's salvation, everything i shared with you is moot.

May God bless you in your struggle to restore your marriage. You want what is right, but there is a right way to get there. :))

Sister In Christ, I was wondering, is your husband a believer? I ask because I too have changed from the "norm" of what my family is used to with me. I spend most of my days volunteering to help other people in which I want nothing in return. My family thinks I am crazy but I feel compelled by the Holy Spirit to do these things. If I try to be selfish, like I want to sometimes go shopping or sit and have coffee or the like, I feel very guilty and bad, like I let Jesus down. I have to help people. It is not a question for me, I have to. I was asking because maybe your husband is being compelled by the Holy Spirit. I know it is easier to say that a demon has him and I am not saying that is not true or possible, but with the love of Jesus anything is possible. Could it be that maybe your husband is being called to make the world a safer place by expelling demons in the name of JESUS CHRIST. Either way I will pray for you and your family, but I would try to see if there is good there first and then act. GOD bless.

Question. Which Bible verse shows you that when people die their souls hang around here? My Bible says they either go to heaven or hell.

Hi Bookworm,

Actually the Bible does address this issue. God warns us not to be involved in such practices. Here are some verses:

(Lev. 19:31) 'Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. (NASB)

The foot note on these words in the bold/italics above actually means: "ghosts or spirits."

(Isa. 8:19-20) When they say to you, "Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter," should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? "To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn (light in them). (NASB)

Does your husband believe the Bible is the truth? Has the day dawned and the morning star risen in his heart?

(2Pet. 1:19) So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

My question would be to him,
1) Where is he getting his authority to "help" these spirits?
2) How will he know whether he is dealing with a ghost or a demonic spirit?

(2Cor. 11:13-15) For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. (NKJV)

Note:

My ex-wife was practicing these things before the "Day dawned in our hearts." She was practicing tarot cards, horoscopes, and channeling spirits. We had a "ghost" in our home. She actually channeled it one day. It was not a pleasent experience to say the least. I almost left her at that moment!
However, when Christ came, we were convicted through God's word, that these things had to go. We repented. She destroyed all her psychic/magic items, and I destroyed my (anti-Christ) musical influences. The spirit that was in our home never made itself known again.

I pray that this helps, and will continue to pray for you both.

In general (anybody that reads this):
If you ever dabbled in the occult, whatever and whenever, you opened the door for demons to come in. Depending on how much and deep there are going to be more or less powerful demons still influencing you or laying dormant for an opportune time, within you!
You have to repent to God.
Remove the right that these demons have within you (the right you gave them when you opened the door with the occult) through renouncing whatever you were involved in and also the spirit of death (there is a death curse for involvement with the occult!) and all occult spirits.

Gal 5:19-21
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Deut 18:10-14
There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12 For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you. 13 You shall be blameless before the LORD your God. 14 For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not appointed such for you.

Lev. 19:31
‘Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Exodus 22:18
18 “You shall not permit a sorceress to live.

Lev 20:6-8,27
6 ‘And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. 7 Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God. 8 And you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the LORD who sanctifies you.
‘A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them.’”

1 Corinthians 6:9-10
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

After renunciation these spirits have to be cast out in the name of Jesus !
And then it's wise to ask the Holy Spirit to fill the person...

This is the only way to really cleanse everything out. Spirits can go "down", lay dormant in a person, once the person stops the occult practices and/or repents, quotes scriptures, worships God...etc. - that doesn't mean that the demons that were "activated" before are gone!

BTW there are NO Ghosts! There are only demons, that will play tricks on people or torment and harass them. If they reach into the physical realm like that, there is almost always witchcraft, sorcery or any other occult practices the originator of an open door.
If a door has been opened to the spiritual realm to "come in" this door also needs to be closed in Jesus name.
Break, burn or throw out all occult items, anoint house, apartment with oil and pray over everything, plead the blood of Jesus over house, property, people.
Never forget to put on the whole armor of God - Eph 6!!!

Remember this is NOT a game or just a Hollywood Movie. This is real, this is dangerous and God hates it so much that there is a death curse for it (OT and NT - God is the same yesterday, today and forever!!!).
This curse can now be broken.

If you ever played with ouija boards, tarot cards, been to psychics, palm readers, involved with horoscopes, any demonic occult movie, game like Harry Potter, Pokemon, Anime, any other witchcraft or sorcery, anything similar like that, etc... then this needs to be reversed, don't just think because you stopped or even just repented it is going to be ok. This can and will influence even your next generations if not taken care of! BEWARE!

Unfortunately this is not being taught in most churches nowadays. That's why so many "Christians" are in the bad shape they are in incl. the churches... - this also not only pertain to the occult but all sins against God. All sins open doors to demons and torment, sicknesses and/or diseases in one form or another, more or less powerful. Yes. God is bigger and more powerful than that but it has to be applied to be in effect. God's will is not done automatically in a person's life and He has given us the power to deal with it...
So just do it!

Hi

This topic is very close to my own heart too. I feel like I'm like your husband. I want to go and cast out demons and bind them. I want to go and heal people and do the things that Jesus and His disciples did. I talked to my pastor and many others about it. Its actually why I'm on this website looking for answers. I know the Bible. I've read it at least 5 times all the way through, various commentaries, etc. I think what you should do is tell your husband what my pastor told me.

What he is talking about is SPIRITUAL WARFARE and it is very dangerous. I've been warned that though my motives to help people and bring them to the sanctuary of the church, the pastor has expressed the opinion that I'm not ready. I need to stay in the safety of certain boundaries, etc.

I know at this time I might not be ready but if I don't try to help others and do what God ask me to do, then how will those wandering lost find their way back home?

my suggestion is that if your husband is resolute in his course. Pray for him, find books on spiritual warfare. those spirits and "ghost" are probably demons in disguise. Is he ready to face that? Does he have his spiritual armor on? Does he know how to tell the difference?

I see demons and angels and spirits and ghost and spoken to psychics, witches warlocks. I meet someone who thought he was a vampire and drank blood. My life has been a spiritual war in ways that most people only have nightmares about. My faith in God is the only thing that has help me maintain my sanity. What do you say to a person that has a demon eating their soul? How do you react when a seraphim appears and gives you a message. cherubim aren't fat chubby babies. In the Bible they are four headed, four winged beast that bring destruction and rain in their wake. Their approach is signaled by the roaring of thousand waves.

Is you husband ready for those things? If he really wants to see the world and deal with the spirits then he should read the Bible about the lives of the prophets and see if he really and truly knows what he is asking for. If you see evil then it will be your responsibility and duty to help that person, are you brave enough to pull them out of their sin and keep them from running back to their demons? Is your light pure enough that you can plant the seeds of hope and show them the Love of Christ in your own life so they may learn from it?

I don't know, I don't feel ready but one can't stands still when you hear the call of Jesus. we are lumps of coal and through pressure and heat we are being transformed into diamonds that will reflect the radiance that God shines into our lives.

Just talk to your husband and ask him why he wants to battle spirits.Make sure he is grounded in Christ and the Bible. Pray for him and trust in God. Listen to God and learn how to help him. That is all that can be done at the moment.

my suggestion is that if your husband is resolute in his course.

Anybody that wants to start helping others to cast out demons - as we are commanded to do by Jesus - must first at least start to get their own demons out! You need to make sure that you begin your own deliverance and have God help you clean out your own heart from things that hinder your walk, relationship with God and gifts and communication and perception and discernment. Any fears, "unpeace" in your life, sicknesses, diseases are in one way or another influenced or caused by generational curses and demons that are behind it with legal rights to torment people. EVERYBODY has some stuff in their live that they need to get rid of in body and/or soul. Sin opens the door, any sin can do that known or unknown.
It is vital to get some of the fruits of the enemy out of our own lives (Gal 5:19-21) especially if occult practices or involvement was an issue. (See my post above) There is a way to deliverance as I described.

A prayer partner will be helpful in getting rid of things. "Confess your sins to each other"...
Renouncing the legal right of the enemy and stronghold in your life and then cast them out!
We are commanded also to cleanse ourselves. This is not an option, just accepting Jesus does not automatically do all of that for you! Hence the command to the church - believers!
Judgment begins first at the house of God! 1 Peter 4:17
