I was in the Pierce County Jail for 10 months when I opened up the news paper to my sister's obituary. It felt like I was kicked in the stomach, I didn't scream out or cry I just looked at the obit stunned. I started blaming everyone for me being in Jail and not being able to be there when my sister died, I was blaming the Judge, my probation officer, my brother, all I wanted to do was tell her that I loved her and I would've died when our mother died if she hadn't been there to support me. But now it was too late. Just when I was at my worst, blaming everyone, I realized that I got myself in Jail. I chose beer over my sister. I chose my stupid friends over my sister, she had been there all along, all I had to do was pick up the phone and dial her number, but I was too worried about me getting drunk and high. The guilt and shame was too much to bear, I broke, I mean really broke. I was a lump on the floor. I lifted my hand up calling out to Jesus, after turning my back on him. after snubbing my nose at him countless times, what does he do? He picked me up. I felt his love and comfort and I stood and said O.K. O.K. I will take a step towards you. That was 3 years ago and Jesus has not left me once. What else can I do but praise him? psalm 51:17 says The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
