Does your church keep a "Rainy Day Fund"? If so, how much do you keep in it, and for what reasons would you draw funds from it?

We have a building upkeep fund. It is used for minor building repairs. Anytime the fund exceeds $10K, the excess goes into our community ministry program. There is always a need in the community.

Hello Billy. We have a Hardship Fund for those members (sadly many these days) who are financial difficulties. Any member can contribute as they are led to and those in need can receive support. God Bless You :)

We are one of several churches in our local area that have pooled our resources to establish a food and clothing pantry that provides items for those in need. They also have a thrift shop that resells (many times gives) donated items to those in need.

We also maintain a fund to provide emergency financial assistance (like utilities being cut off, gasoline for work, mechanical repairs, etc.). It amazes me how many people that we have helped not only repay the assistance, but also become supporters of the fund. Many times needs exceeds the balance. One text message to church members, will solve this problem.

Do you provide financial counseling?

no the poor should go out and find 2 dimes and give 1 to the church. stop been a beggar and dont be a burden on people. the pastor has to have the lastest sports car and pay for his gas in his private jet. that dime will help towards this. God Bless.

Where I live it rains a lot so we just plant trees to absorb the water and grow gardens where we can.

Hello Billy. Yes that too. Sometimes people can be in a place of hardship not because they don't have sufficient income, but rather their income is good but it's a budgeting or addiction issue. God Bless You :)

Unmonitored "rainy day" funds should never be allowed. Multiple checkpoints are required, regardless of the people involved. Nearly very church has a story to tell.

I agree. I believe that all funds must be carefully monitored. God expects accurate accounting of every dollar that we receive, both as a church, and a Christian.

We received a letter from the IRS a few years ago telling us that we owed nearly $10,000 in taxes and penalties. They were the result of improper filing of employee salary forms. It took over a year to clear up the problems and file the proper forms. It turned out that the wrong forms had been mailed to the wrong address. Fortunately we had a CPA member who audited our books and found the mistake. Turned out we owed nothing. Lesson learned. Today we have a continuous double check of all income and expenses, and an annual audit.
