Hey, first thread on any forum for a LONG time. So hope I do this right.
But anyway, I stumbled onto an album that has been really enriching for me. Never heard of the artist(band) but the album is from Ascend the Hill and its simply titled Hymns: Take the world but give me Jesus. Hymns are typically a mixed bag for me, but I so enjoy hymns done in this style that I am hoping someone can point me towards more music like this. Artists or albums. Thank you kindly.

Gonna try to link it if I can, not sure if this will succeed.

this album is an excellent starting point, as well as this band - most if not all of their original songs could appropriately be called "hymns" too.
whole albums full of modern versions of old hymns are rare; more often you'll find an artist doing one or two hymns, or even more often, borrowing verses from them and writing a new song - like this song, inspired by "it is well with my soul" -

another album - really an EP, only 5 songs - is Wayfarer's "the river"
includes this version of "how long?"

also includes wonderful versions of "shall we gather at the river", "Jesus savior pilot me", "what wondrous love is this" and "alas and did my savior bleed"
the album can be found here:

but more often a group just does a single hymn. that can be harder to search for, because you don't know what you're looking for -- you could just try searching youtube for a particular hymn, but you're mostly wading through a few hundred church choirs or singing it in the traditional way.

like Jars of Clay's version of "i need thee every hour"

the David Crowder Band does "i saw the light" and a few other southern / country gospel tunes. it's actually pretty easy to find bluegrass versions of a lot of hymns, though it might not be what you're looking for; bluegrass as a genre has deep roots in spiritual songs.

Anathallo also did a "hymns" EP, though a lot more low key than Ascend the Hill, and not as melodic as Wayfarer's -- here's "come ye sinner" from that work:

the 77's "holy ghost building" album has several hymn / gospel standards covers.
here's a very nice rendition of "keep your lamps trimmed and burning"

Jars of Clay's "redemption songs" album is also mostly hymns. here's "i'll fly away" with special guests The Blind Boys From Alabama -- you might also look up the Blind Boys albums. they've been playing gospel for a very long time, and have done many hymns.
