Off the original question, but u asked or mentioned what was real adultery... the bible states that even if a man looks upon a woman with desire in his heart then he has committed adultery.
Jesus was addressing the abuses of a system being manipulated by men. The original language is difficult to render in English. Look at the following translation:
"But I can guarantee that any man who divorces his wife for any reason other than unfaithfulness makes her look as though she has committed adultery. Whoever marries a woman divorced in this way makes himself look as though he has committed adultery." (Mt. 5:32, God's Word)
See Lenski's commentary as well.
Guys,
I would like to humbly suggest that we are over thinking this. The issue is not whether remarriage is "allowed", or not. The issue is whether or not remarriage will be forgiven. And of course the answer to that is yes! None of us is above sin. Who among us has not looked "lustfully" at some member of the opposite sex at some time in our lives? Who hasn't coveted something at one time or another? The point is God forgives us through Jesus Christ! Jesus himself confirms this in Mark 28, "Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter,..."." In Psalm 103, David writes "Praise the Lord my soul,...who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,...". (v. 2-3)
Everyone makes mistakes. Unfortunately, in today's world, premature marriage is a common one. While I believe that God wants us to enter marriage more cautiously and thus have a better chance of "survival", I also believe that He forgives all sins. So let's focus on making our current marriages the best they can be. If they don't happen to be the first, God will forgive us, but I believe that He will expect us to have learned from our mistakes.
Please forgive my pontificating, if that's how this comes across. For the record, I answered the poll, and I have been married multiple times. And the breakups were primarily my fault.
Grace, I am a retired U.S. Army Reserve Chaplain and Evangelical Pastor and can agree with you. I have experienced PTSD and Combat Trauma due to multiple tours of duty and have put my family through emotional drama. I have taken full responsibility for my actions and have been in VA Counseling both Individual and in Group Therapy since late Dec 2010. My wife left me one week before christmas and we have been seperated 2 month this upcoming Sunday. My wife filed for divorce in Jan 2011. I am crushed, but holding on to hope in Christ that He will reconcile her heart. We have two Children who I love dearly, ages 10 and 11. I don't want to lose my family. The church she was attending has said the same things you mentioned they were saying to you. Otherwords, get a divorce. I live in a State that will grant a no-fault divorce as well. No matter what the other person request. I feel like I am on the railroad tracks and the train is coming full speed ahead at me. My prayer is, that God will look at me as a sinner saved by grace, asking his intervention to save our family from divorce in Jesus Name. I have taken the right steps to become whole, transform and heal for my family, friends and collegues through VA Counseling and Support. May God look at me and favor my request that my family be spared from divorce and restored by his everloving grace.
In Christ+
