This may be something silly but I think having a counter that shows how many people are in each room would stop people from a little frustration of saying Hi to someone then they leave because they're just room hopping. Again I know this is ridiculous but hey it bugs me :P

I wasn't clear with this sorry... I meant while you're in a room be able to click on the room's tab and have it display the number of people in the room like this next to the room name (10) or (0). Kinda like that? I know there's already something that counts current room members.

Sometimes people room hop looking for another person. Or most people enter the Lounge first, with the intention of changing rooms because they are unaware that they can go straight to the room they want and don't need to go through the Lounge first. Or they are just searching around for something interesting.
And if someone comes into a room and see's people in other rooms it may encourage them to room hop to see whats going on in other rooms. Room hopping is just the nature of this type of environment, so it's not going to do much to help slow that down.

A good way around this is just wait before greeting someone. Or wait until they say something first. Not that the counter is a bad idea, i just don't see it doing much to prevent a lot of room hopping.
