To this season most would associate the Saint Nicolaus (Dec.6) with anything else than charity and help for the needy and some would also add to that suffering persecution for the faith.

However, there's another side of the story of "Santa Claus" (and by this is meant the real one person, not some gnome) that few would mention. In fact he was also a passionate defender of the faith. A little too passionate and hot blooded at times, it may appear.

At the well known first council of Nicea in AD 325, where the church reiterated the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, he rebuked the opponent Arius, who denied the deity of Christ, to the point it spilled over to a punch in his face! Might be a somewhat different perspective of remembering this Saint.

Yeah. Not many people know about the "real" St. Nicholas. The only people who really know him are Eastern Christians.

Edit: It's funny to think about a man in an omophorion (The scarf-looking thing for those who aren't knowledgeable on church vestments) punching another person.

Notable thing with this is that such a great man of God as St Nicolaus showed this kind of weakness. Makes him kinda more "human" and easier to relate to, and identify with.

On a side note. Do EO portray Santa as a bishop? Because growing up all the portrayals of Santa (the little statues that sit on the mantle) we had were always made so that Santa looked like a Bishop. Which strangely would technically make these statues useful for a home shrine since they're a portrayal of a Saint.
