this issue isnt how girls dress or look, its what is in the heart that matters.
one girl who has a small dress on may have the purest heart and zero dark intentions.
a female in full business dress on the other hand could very well be sneaky or have bad intentions.

the over all point is.. if men/people had pure hearts, guarded their hearts... no matter what we saw it wouldnt induce evil actions.

i agree to support the villainy of girls clothing often basically backs up predators. with that same old sick attitude
"theyre asking for it" etc... its quite sad.

I agree except the reality is there are predators and until Christ returns there will be predators.

Yes, it will be the fault of the predator but we must teach our daughters common sense as well.

Why teach our daughters to use the buddy system? Because reality is that men are stronger. A predator preys on the single or alone. A buddy system will help counter the odds.

Should they have to live like that? No. But reality is reality.

Hello!
I'm new here (so hello everyone!)
I'm wondering your views on modesty. I am a teenage girl (enough said ). Seriously though, I am fairly new to religion, and don't want to make any huge mistakes, but I am also aware of how it is actually quite difficult to be a devoted Christian in this day and age.

Soooo...
That being said, how far should modesty go? Is it bad to wear shorts, or certain dresses? And where do tight leggings go in all this?

Hope this makes sense and any advice is always appreciated! :)

Most of the modesty type scriptures are aimed at women and address issues such as wearing gold, pearls, etc. But modesty in the sense of not dressing to provoke lustful attention is also important.

I had a conversation with a brother on a college campus once. He said some young women dress a certain way because a lot of men look at them, but if they knew the impulses and thoughts of the men looking at them, they would not dress that way. He said it was like the tiger looking at the gazelle.

Girls go from being little children where most people who seem them might think they are cute, but not have any kind of sexual thoughts toward them, to gradually growing to a point where men take notice. They may not realize the importance of covering up. As a young man, I didn't think that people would be looking at me in a pair of shorts and lusting after my legs. I don't know if the girls were lusting after my legs or not back then :) but some men look lustfully after a girls body if the clothing is too high or too low or even missing inthe middle. Different men pay more attention to different parts. Maybe in Saudia Arabia, they drool over wrists and ankles, too. Some of this may be culturally influenced.

As a Christina we are not supposed to cause our bother to stumble..... that is to be enticed into sin. Looking with lust/covetousness is a sin. Some men will lust no matter what and make a special effort to ogle and think lustful thoughts. There are Christian men, especially young single men, though it can affect old also, to put forth a conscious effort to aver their eyes. Job was a blameless and upright man who was old enough to have children old enough to have their own homes, and he said in Job 31:1

“I made a covenant with my eyes
not to look lustfully at a young woman. " (NIV)

Some clothing on a woman, especially a young beautiful, is 'eye magnet' material. Again too high, too low, too much skin. An upright man like Job would have to exercise discipline not to look. I think we men might just be a bit more strongly affected by this than women. Though men should be careful about going around baring the 6-pack abs or wearing muscle shirts to induce certain feelings in women as well. Dressing modestly can be a way of loving your neighbor.

Also, if you think, "No one is going to lust after me" there are some people out there who like the hefty or obese look. Some people like hairy, some like little to no hair. Whatever you don't like about your looks, someone out there might be attracted to that, so keep that in mind.

And some things you should just show to the person you marry if you marry.

Don't forget too tight/clingy. Many women wear yoga or legging style pants that leave zero to
the imagination. That is why I mentioned much earlier about wearing tops that are long enough
to go down to my hips. Another problem with modern clothing is how sheer it is. I am noticing
this more and more! Even in knits, which are so thin you can essentially see through them.

Hi Lizzie. I came across this post, and found it fascinating. If you don't mind taking some advice from an old lady: I believe that you should be allowed to wear skirts and dresses that are short and form-fitting as long as they are within good taste and enhance your God-given natural-beauty in a manner that is not too suggestive, or vulgar. I have three daughters and a son. When my girls were young, I didn't prevent them from dressing nice, and perhaps a little sexy. It's part of being a woman, and enjoy being a female who is discovering and learning life.

I thank those of you who understand where I’m coming from concerning this particular topic and subject. We can flow with the changes of time in the midst of a fluctuating, divided and fractured culture. Yet, be strong and resolute to know who we are as conservatively progressive Christians. Bless His Name that IS above every name, and by whose “Stripes we are healed.”

Not really sure what it means to be a conservatively progressive Christian?
Where do we progress and were do we conserve?

The way I see it (and you can agree or disagree, naturally), is this: We “progress” through and by maturity and life experience. As it regards our own individual walk with life and spiritual inclination and beliefs. These processes can elevate and edify our character to accept changes as they may come in our lives. We “Conserve” by adhering to the principles and standards which define our moral character and individual system(s) of beliefs and world view. Thereby, I believe, developing and maintaining a consistent yet immovable position that can’t be shaken or undone by outside influences or circumstances to influence ambiguity or doubt of where one stands in that which we believe and hold to be “true”. That latter comment can apply to that which empowers you to stand, fight and prevail. Does this answer your question?

Well it is rather vague, but having been a young girl once who sometimes dressed inappropriately I do not really look back as that being a high point in my life, now I do not have daughters but knowing what I know now I would strongly try to dissuade them from dressing "sexy" as you put it.

In today's immodest culture a little "sexy" ain't gonna cut it if you want attention.

I apologize to have offended your spiritual and moral sensibilities. Why the hostility?

This is the problem with message boards if I was using my voice and body language you would hear and see my tone was not hostile.

I am not offended, I just do not agree.

Also, too, let me know if there’s anything I can do for you. There’s absolutely no “hidden agenda“ or insidious pretense. Just a genuine and sincere offering of fellowship from a “wayward“ older gal.

Let's put it this way @NicoleSolid9
You are showing midriff in your profile photo and that's fine. It's perfectly acceptable in the right circumstances (workouts, beach, lake, barbecues and lounging around) but definitely not all.

However, my sister went to a concert recently...a year or so ago....and where she (I thought) was going to be showing a lot of leg....I wasn't expecting see through lace tights and a thong.
See, she is going for a professional degree that relies heavily upon reputation of being a serious and conservative person.

Completely unacceptable for her profession even though she was in a party environment at the concert. And since she is also interested in having a family with a Christian young man and is currently not dating....again not really using the right bait to attract the right kind of guys.

And I get it....she wants to be attractive. And she is beautiful to me (smart and kind and caring)...and the kind of guy she wants is not going to accept her dressing that way or other things that say "Street walker".

You can dress a LITTLE sexy without looking like someone who has an OnlyFans account or has a high body count. Sure Christian guys date girls with tattoos but they marry the ones without them.
Sorry if that's harsh or upsets people...but the latest studies are saying this.

I understand your concern and expansive admonition of an old woman’s point of view. You must be one of the few people who are truly Righteous and beyond reproach. I can relate to your concerns about decency and safety with the same passion and intensity and integrity as you. When I was a young woman I spent six years as an intelligence officer in the US Marine Corps. Then, before marrying my first husband Randall, I went to work for the Government for a number of years pretty much doing the same thing although on a whole new level of awareness about the depth of depravity, and the appalling capacity of horrific evil our fellow “humans“ are capable of.
Then, many iterations later as a retired high school superintendent and special education teacher, my eyes and situational and sensory awareness became further immersed in the ways of societal behaviors and proper attire conducive to minimize arousal and increase decency and appropriate decorum. Therefor, sir, I fully understand your conviction and rebuke of my opinion: Thank you for your honesty and rebuke. You and the other “Righteous“ people here don’t have to worry about seeing anything else from me whatsoever. My eyes have been opened up for the fourth time in my 61 years of life. So, Thank you and have a blessed and peaceful Easter weekend.
