I remember my dad spoke to me about this he was fascinated with the ark, they lost the first battle
To the Philistines.
In the first battle they lost less man if I remember correctly but they had the ark and the presence of God with the ark.



In the second battle where they lost the ark they lost more men, was the presence of God with the ark and the Israelites in that battle and did the Philistines steal an empty box ?.

Still seem strange to answer a question with a question,
1 Samuel 4-8 The Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon – The Scripture Says

what was the dagon that fell to the ground when the ark entered there house of dagon

I wonder if God chose the Philistines for something ?

When the Philistines took the ark of God into the house of Dagon, Dagon fell upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord1. The Philistines had placed the ark in the temple of the popular Philistine god, Dagon, in Ashdod2. This was their vengeance for the slaughter of the 3,000 Philistine worshippers in the temple of the same deity at Gaza, not many years before, by the blind Hebrew champion Samson2.
