THE COMPASSIONS OF CHRIST
Coral Gathman Cook
How great are the compassions of Christ
Of my sweet Savior, my everlasting Lord
How many are His tender mercies toward me
Which come new every morning
How great is His grace
How undeserved His love
When I was but a small child
I could feel His breath upon my face
And I knew That He was always
Close at hand
I did not know to doubt Him then
And never did I question His sweet love
But as I grew and began to learn
The awful lessons this world taught
Seeds of doubt were planted
In my heart and in my soul
I took the scorner's seat
I questioned Him at last
I finally walked away from Him
Lived according to my selfish will
Not caring what He wanted for my life
Nor yet how He was grieving for my soul
I broke His heart for sure
When I rejected Him like that
Jesus did not let me go
He held me very close
Loving me as a Father loves His child
One day I found the night too dark
The way too rough to go alone
I turned and I came back to Him
