At this point, though, you need to define "lawlessness."
It goes hand in hand with the definition of sin, as recorded in 1John3:4. What is spoken of here is working iniquity, or lawlessness. Same thing.

1John.3

[4] Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Perhaps it is helpful to deal in specifics. Is sexual permissiveness a sin? Is pride a sin? Is substance dependency, such as cigarettes, caffeine, and alcohol a sin?

anyrhing that comes before God in your life can turn into a sin.watching too much t.v.,too much time on the internet, eating to much, drinking or smoking to excess, reading books, the list goes on and on.but keep God first and let the Sprit lead and this keep temptation at a minimun.

Some things should be done only in moderation, keeping the Lord central in our lives, as you say. Others things should never be done, such as sexual permissiveness.

What is sin and not sin all basically goes back to the five books of Moses, called Torah by the jews. The rest of the Bible expounds on how we should relate to it.

To the examples given, as I see them; pride can both be a sin and a "fruit" of sin. Sexual permissiveness is most likely related to fornication in some form and thereby sinful. Substance dependency means that something has taken the grip of you and causes you to sin.

I do not believe that the use of alcohol in itself is a sin. About caffeine and tobacco I am more doubtful if they are unnatural (not created for human consumption) or against the body. Caffeine in moderation might do, tobacco I see no good use for to intake in the body.
1Cor.3

[16] Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
[17] If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for thetemple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

1Cor.6

[18] Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that commiteth fornication sinneth against his own body.
[19] What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
[20] For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

It is one thing to read the Bible. It is something else to walk with the Lord. For instance, the Bible says nothing specifically about tobacco, but the Lord has taught me not to use tobacco.

Do you suggest there be any contradiction between these two? I think not. Anyone who walks with the Lord will be led to a keen interest in what the Scriptures says, and says not.

For instance, the Bible says nothing specifically about tobacco, but the Lord has taught me not to use tobacco.
The question is if using tobacco is a sin or not, objectively speaking.

If someone came to you and asked if smoking is a sin, what would you say?

You worded this well, placing the Lord above all things.

It is my personal opinion that using tobacco is a sin. It is something the Lord has taught me. I used to smoke. He stepped into my life and influenced me to quit.

OK. My take on it would be that it is not actually a sin in and by itself, however it would ultimately lead to sin - so, it should be avoided.

Cancer and emphysema are a couple of reasons not to smoke. You are playing “Russian Roulette” when you do.

I think all addictions separate us from the Lord. Rather than having the Lord at the center of our lives, our addiction(s) become the center of our lives, whether we care to admit it or not.

Exactly. Whch is hinted at in this scripture:

1Cor.10

[23] All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
There's this interpretation if this verse that this "all things are lawful for me" was a pagan saying, Then Paul made the input that "all things are lawful for me" are not expedient nor edifying, What Paul actually was objecting to here then was the kind of thinking, that is so popular in our day, that says "if it feels good - do it".

I experienced a period in my life, in the mid- and late- eighties, where the Lord taught me things he didn’t want me to do, such as using tobacco. It is well described by this verse:

But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:33 RSV
