I would suggest that the USA is the revived Roman Empire. The founding fathers specifically build the government on the study of the roman republic including the three part government, the representative legislature, and the voting by the populace.

Right now we have an American Empire with troops in 140 countries, we push and shove other countries around and we are the single nation which everyone makes their strategic plans around. Yeah sure we do not share the same original countries which the Ancient Roman Empire had but that is not the determining factor. The US is the new Rome.

The ancient Rome built roads so that the whole world could come to exchange goods with it and so has the US done the same. Like it or not the Roman Peace was spread around the known world so that commerce could be performed safely and with a common currency(like the US dollar.) The number of parallels is amazing.

Sadly the European union is merely a sad shadow of what Rome was, and it hardly has any of it's characteristics. That is why I would suggest that it is not the new revived Rome.
