THE SCARLET CORD

Ecclesiastes 4:12 ESV
And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

In life, we can experience being worn down or the feeling of being frayed as each fiber of our being is stretched in all different directions until the core reaches a breaking point.

We look around and begin to feel alone while still trying to hold it all together. We hold on to the point where we are no longer in a stable state of being. The stress overload reaches a point if not repaired, we snap. We snap into depression, panic attacks, paralyzing fear, burnout, or even physical sickness.

At this moment, for the Christian, it is vital we look to God to take away the weight of the burden that has us in stress overload. Lay aside every weight and sin, looking to Jesus, the founder, and perfecter of our faith.

Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV
12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Looking to Jesus, we find the burden to be light. Light enough so that we may rest long enough, allowing God to repair the damage.

Matthew 11:29-30 ESV
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

God brings us into His Kingdom, and we become His children. On Earth, we are united under the Church, and in unification, we become one, one body, one mind, one Spirit.

There is a technique for fixing a fraying cord of rope. It involves trimming, splicing, and heat-shrink tubing. The first step would be to trim away the damaged pieces. The second step is to splice the ends together. The third step involves applying a heat-shrink tubing that shrinks once the heat is applied to protect and secure the repair.

Frayed: worn away or tattered along the edges.

God wants to repair the damage by

1. Taking the weight off of you and transferring it to Him, making the burden now light enough to repair.

2. Once you are in a state of rest, He wants to bring you into unification and make you whole again: one Chord, one body, one Church.

3. He will begin to trim away the damage by convicting us of sin, urging us into holiness, and guiding us in Spirit and Word. Through His Word, we are renewed spiritually, mentally, and physically.

4. In this process called Sanctification, God begins to repair you by realigning you with the Spirit and the Church. With a triune braided chord, you begin to feel strengthened.

5. Finally, the perfecter of our faith will provide us with the shield of faith, which will operate as a protective barrier. When heat is applied, it now begins to make us perfect, complete, and lacking nothing.

James 1:2-4 ESV
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

If you are still of a single chord operating alone, trying to hold the weight of the world, then I invite you to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior who wants you to enter into this triune cord of completeness.

Three symbolically is equated Biblically to completeness. Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane 3 times; He was placed on the cross at the 3rd hour or 9 A.M., He suffered on the cross between the 6th and the 9th hours (3 hours), once He succumbed to His injuries, there was darkness over the land for 3 hours, Jesus was dead for 3 days and 3 nights but giving way to completion in the resurrection. Our sins paid in full, the Mosaic law fulfilled, and now we may be perfect, complete, lacking in nothing, for we are spiritually made whole and sealed unto the day of redemption.

Once you have given your life to Christ, you can now operate as a triune threefold cord that provides you with the strength of God and the Church (the body of Christ, aka other believers).

This cord will be of scarlet as you are now covered by the blood of Christ. The blood refers to Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross.

Revelation 1:5 ESV
And from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.

The scarlet cord also carries a symbolic image of salvation or saving in the book of Joshua, chapter 2, in the battle of Jericho. Rahab was the Canaanite prostitute who hid the Israelite spies that Joshua sent in to observe the city. Her house was either built into the wall or right beside it.

Joshua 2:15
English Standard Version
15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall so that she lived in the wall.

Rahab believed the God of Israel to be the one true God and asked to be saved. The requirements were to tie a scarlet cord in the window.

Joshua 2:17-19
New International Version
17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them.

As the story goes, she and her household were saved, and Rahab ended up being a descendant of Jesus Christ. By securing the scarlet cord, it signified for Joshua's army to pass over her and protect the lives within the home. Joshua's army marched around the city one time for six days and seven times on the seventh day.

But reaching the seventh march on the seventh day with the Ark of the Covenant they blew seven trumpets, and the people gave a mighty shout. Upon doing so, the walls around Jericho began to fall except where Rahab was living at. The city was destroyed and set ablaze in a great fire.

British archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon re-excavated the site with modern methods in the 1950s. She uncovered the remains to fit exactly found the Biblical account.

She found a preserved city wall on the North side of the city that houses were built against it. While all other portions of the wall had been destroyed and the city burned.

This is also a symbolism back to Exodus 12 and the 10th plague of Egypt. The Jews were commanded to spread the blood (scarlet color) of a Lamb over their doorposts so that the Angel of death would Passover them, saving them from God’s wrath. This event is the origin of the Passover festival and Passover feast. Also, notice that Jesus is considered the Passover Lamb.

1 Corinthians 5:7 ESV
Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

So I call on all who will hear, believe, repent, and accept the Lord Jesus into your life. Become like the scarlet cord strengthened by God and supported by the Church. For the price of sin is death, and we all need the blood covering of the Lamb to save us from our debt which we could never pay.

Hebrews 9:12 ESV
He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

Accept the free gift of grace and live toward your eternal redemption.
