We were walking quietly
past the edge of
he went right up to the edge
and jumped the guardrail, looking down
"wait", I said,
"If the bank gives way, you're going to fall!"
"No", he said, "I want to get a better view!"
The view is great, my feet are firm
I'll never come to any harm"

And then the cliff edge suddenly
crumbled underneath his feet.
I ran over to the edge
he was standing on a ledge.
"Good", I said, "you seem unhurt
just covered in lots of dirt.
There's a rope tied to the rail
I'll toss it down,
"No", he said, "I'm not done yet!
I want to explore farther down."
He slid slowly down the cliff
towards the river that was below
He did nothing to stop his slide,
but seemed instead, to enjoy the ride
I called to him, and pointed out
the rope nearby, strong and stout
surely he would grab ahold
and come back to the fold
he seemed at first, not to hear
he showed no signs of any fear
Surely he could see the river there?
and remembered that he couldn't swim?
But happily, or so it seemed
he went on justifying what he pleased
He seemed determined then to drown
and hit some snow on his way down
"Wait!" I called, "Can't you see
this isn't how it has to be?"
"No", he said, "It's still okay.
It's not sin, if you squint this way!"
"That's not the point. We're told to flee!
You kill yourself, you're killing me.
There's not one of us that's anything
without Jesus, the risen king
so come on now, you've had your fun
grab that rope, and meet the Son.
He dug in his heels and stopped the slide
could this be the death of his pride?
I stared at him, with so much hope
that he would grab on to the rope
at first, he just stared up at me
then he said, "You'll never see
how far I've come, how much I've grown.
You'll never know what I have known!"
And with that, his knees then bent
picked up his heels, and off he went
I moved back from the edge again
before I saw the gruesome end
I've always known, but now I see
we're ALL our own worst enemy.
