A really awesome book in my AP literature course this year by Tim O'Brien is The Things They Carried. It is about the being a soldier in the Vietnam war. It if fiction, but being that the author fought in the war, it is incredibly realistic. It is a war novel though, so there is bad language and mature content, but it is a fantastic read.

Anyway, in the book, a big idea was that every soldier had things they carried.. whether it be tangible or not. Some would carry photos, some would carry guilt, etc.

In life we give the things we carry to God! We realize that they are too heavy for us!


What did you carry before you knew God?

P.S. This post was inspired by Hornetguy-- he posted about carrying knives and this post came to mind..

Just for fun what things do you still carry? It can be like your phone and keys, or it can be something you are having trouble giving over.

It seems I've always known of God, growing up in a Christian family, but I've had my share of "things carried" through my life.

I carried a volatile temper for quite a few years, up until my early 20's.. I finally decided I'd have to turn that loose, or die of a heart attack before I turned 30...:rolleyes: I still have the potential for quick anger and responses from that anger, but for the most part, God has shown me a better way.... mostly I'm pretty laid-back.
 
I love hearing about how God changes people! I love how we are His "Constant works in progress"

God is so good...

people actually ask me what happened

its a noticable difference

even in my facial expressions

praise God

because i loved all that sin

had no desire to leave it behind before him

wore my lifestyle like a badge of honor
 
I used to carry the great weight of anxiety and lust. Giving these things over to God, has made it much easier to navigate the path he will have me walk.

I still carry the consequences of poor choices I have made, but the redeeming love of Jesus has become far more noticeable.

Hebrews 10:14
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. :)

Minutes before I was saved, I was carrying my iPhone 6, while looking at the spiciest memes.

Now, I am still carrying my iPhone 6, as I'm typing this out :)
 
I carried anger, lust, pride, addiction and ignorance around before I came to the Lord.

What I didn't know that I carried as well was sadness, fear, anxiety, guilt.


All of that still pops up from time to time but I don't continue to carry it.
