What is the “third heaven” that Paul talks about in this Scripture:

I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 2Cor.12:2 rsv

The third heaven is Heaven. The first heaven is the earth's atmosphere, the second heaven is outer space, and the third heaven is Heaven.

paul was talking about John the disciple, when John said that he saw into the third heaven in rev, what did he see the throne of God which is in heaven

The Third Heaven, also known as Sagun or Shehaqim,[1] is a spiritual division of the universe within Judeo-Christian cosmology. In some traditions it is considered the abode of God,[2] and in others a lower level of Paradise, commonly one of seven.[3][

I agree with the scholars who would say it is an expression meaning "the highest heaven". By highest they are not describing it's "geography" but the ecstasy of the expeirence. Thus, I would conclude that is is speaking of the "throneroom" of God, when His prescence is experienced most tangable.

The Bible refers to where the birds fly as heaven.
The Bible refers to where the Sun, Moon, and stars are as heaven.
The Bible refers to the realm of the spirits as heaven.

God place of residence (if you will) is called Heaven.

The first heaven is ALL that we can see, including the stars, moon and anything else that is visable from earth in 'outer' space'. It is the PHYSICAL of the universe. The 2nd heaven is a SPIRITUAL realm in which the demonic reside. The 3rd heaven, also a spiritual realmed location, is the location of the Throne room of God and where Jesus is seated at His right hand. It is the realm/location from wihich He commissions His angels to do His bidding. We know that in the book of Daniel, Michael the Arc Angel informs Daniel that he was detained from bringing answer to his (Daniel's) prayer because in coming from that place of being commissioned by God to answer that prayer, the 3rd heaven, he encountered and had to fight the prince of Persia which is a spiritual metaphor for a territorial demonic principality. Since the demonic cannot enter the 3rd heaven, it is understood that in order to get from the 3rd heaven to us, they must pass through the demonic-infested 2nd heaven.
