This topic does not apply to you since you don't believe the "heart of the earth" is referring to the tomb.
Ephesians 4:
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Acts 2:
30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

1 Peter 3:
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

1 Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.[/QUOTE]

If "en tais kardiai tEs gEs" means "in the heart of the planet" or "in the heart of the dirt", then Eph. 4:9, and Acts 2:31 could be talking about the same time period as "the sign of Jonas". But what time period do you think "en tais kardiai tEs gEs" would refer to if it equated to " in the heart of the land/country"? What comes to mind when we think of "the heart of a land or a country"?

What comes to mind when the scripture says he descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

It says somewhere Jesus went up to Jerusalem? Should we assume that every time it is said of Jesus that He went up, it must be to Jerusalem?

It is true that Jesus spent three days and three nights on the temple mount, like Jonah spent three days and three nights in the fish's belly.. And it is also true that Jesus died, his soul descended into hades, and was raised from hades and put back into his body so that he was raised from the dead after three days, in three days, and on the third day.

I don't see any reason to assume that scripture was speaking of the same time period in both cases. Three days and three nights would refer to a period ranging between something like 48 hours and two seconds; and 35 hours and 59 minutes and 58 seconds.

Within three days, after three days and on the third day indicate a period of time that ranges between 24 hours and 2 seconds; and 35 hours and 59 minutes and 58 seconds.

re: "What is your purpose in starting this thread. It is obviously not to uderstand the biblical text and consider which interpretations of the biblical text are viable."

That is correct. However, that is an issue for another topic. This particular topic deals with one specific issue - the issue of the commonality of saying that a daytime and/or a night time would be involved with an event when no part of a daytime or no part of a night time could be.

re: "It seems like your only concern is to discredit the Friday crucifixion..."

That is a concern, but not for the purpose of this specific topic. There are other ones which discuss that.

re: "This thread seems to be merely an attempt to say "gotcha!" to some select group you disagree with, rather than an attempt to get to a reasonable conclusion concerning what "in the belly of the whale" and "in the heart of the earth" meant to Jesus and the Jews at the time."

Again, that's an issue for another topic. This one is directed to anyone who thinks it refers to the tomb or at the earliest to when the Messiah's spirit left His body.

Those last two paragraphs should read as:

I don't see any reason to assume that scripture was speaking of the same time period in both cases. Three days and three nights would refer to a period ranging between something like 48 hours and two seconds; and 71 hours and 59 minutes and 58 seconds.

Saying three days and three nights sets a higher minimum time-span than saying merely three days, but both expressions have the same maximum limit..
