Assad 'open' to negotiations with US, says ISIS strengthening despite airstrikes

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Sunday that he’s "open" to negotiations with the United States and that airstrikes conducted by a U.S.-led coalition in the region are not defeating the Islamic State terror group.

"We didn’t attack the American population. We didn’t support terrorists who did anything in the United States,” Assad told CBS’ "60 Minutes." "We always wanted to have good relation with the United States. We never thought in the other direction."

Assad was reacting to comments made earlier this month by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in which Kerry said Washington was "working very hard with other interested parties to see if we can reignite a diplomatic outcome ... Because everyone agrees there is no military solution. There is only a political solution."
Assad's right, though how far we could trust him as an ally is a big question. But he hasn't done anything to facilitate the rise of ISIS. If he is removed from power, it opens the door for Iran to swallow up his nation as well as Iraq, and have the beginnings of a "United States of Islam" spread out from the Mediterranean Sea to Afghanistan, and perhaps beyond.

I agree.....you know there was one thing about Assad....he allowed Christians (so called) to practice and was/is somewhat of a buffer to radicalized Islam.....Even though I don't agree with everything he has done/is doing I have often felt like he got the crap end of the stick.....as far as his right to rule.....that is up to his people and the one in control of ALL things.....

Saw this yesterday. Here is the CBS portion of the interview with Assad. The rest of the interview between Charlie Rose and Assad is expected to be released sometime today.

Assad is not exactly credible.............he lies so often, even he doesn't know when he is speaking the truth any more. Wouldn't believe all he says....................

Assad is the head of one of the major factions in Syria and overall in World War 3. He is credible insofar that he speaks what he thinks and therefore whether one agrees or not, they know where he stands.

Not really, he has backtracked so many times, it is difficult to know anything about him, or what he may do. His denials of gassing his own people has been proven a lie..........his murder of innocent citizens is on the record, yet he claimed they were insurgents..........and on, and on, nothing credible about him in my opinion.

From what I have seen they all have used chemical weapons. Only Assad willingly allowed the UN to destroy much of his stockpile as agreed upon though. That alone is something unique in modern history, especially for being in the midst of a brutal war. Assad is not our friend, but do not make the mistake of thinking the jihadists are either.
