What are we capable of?

  • “Therefore *the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of you, and the sons shall eat their fathers*; and I will execute judgments in you, and the whole remnant of you will I scatter into all the winds.” (Ezekiel 5.10).

Perhaps you say: I would never do this. Nevertheless, try to fancy yourself in this situation:

  • “Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. The tongue of the nursing infant cleaves to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaks it unto them. They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.” (Lamentations 4.3-5).

In sooth, we don’t know ourselves (1Corinthians 13.12):

  • “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17.9).

Jesus, notwithstanding, knows us very well:

  • “And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.” (John 2.25).

So, don’t get angry when Jesus corrects you:

  • “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” (Jeremiah 17.10)

However painful the situation looks like, believe in what is written in the Holy Scripture:

  • “My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: for whom the LORD loves he corrects; even as a father the son in whom he delights.” (Proverbs 3.11,12).
  • “And all of you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks unto you as unto children, my son, despise not you the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are rebuked of him: for whom the Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives. If all of you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chastens not? But if all of you be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are all of you bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby” (Hebrews 11.5-11).

So, if you desire a day fraught of the liberty of Jesus, be like David, be sure that your glory will be greater than whatever suffering that you have to pass to reach it:

  • “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalms 139.23,24).
  • “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8.18).
